Lighting by Gregory in my experience has the best selection and staff on the bowery. If you found something you know you want, you also might be able to save some money at Ylighting.com or lightinguniverse.com

across the street from Lighting by Gregory is Lumen where we have ordered nearly all of our fixtures for our renovation. the manager is a woman named Vivian who is extremely knowledgable about fixtures/correct sizing/wattage and willing to order most anything on approval. The store itself is small but filled with quality and she has many catelogues to augment the selection. if you find something elsewhere, in most cases she can order it for you also and her pricing is very competitive. we did lots of comparison shopping in the Bowery and elsewhere and Lumen won our business.

Having make and model info helps a lot when shopping. Lighting By Gregory is definitely the Bowery's preeminent store. For most items, this is my go-to place. There isn't much room to negotiate here but there is a little sometimes. They are also very reputable. They fall short when an item is backordered or unavailable--they don't always communicate the info quickly or with the amount of info you may like such as when the item will truly be available. But for most purchases I go there. I did by a Schoenbek (sp?) chandelier at the place just to the north of them, I think, because at the time LBG didn't have it or carry it or the price I got was better nextdoor--I don't recall which. For chandeliers, I'm not sure LBG is the best source though. They deal primarily in more contemporary fixtures and less eclectic lighting. There's no harm in shopping the neighboring stores since they are all so close together and most are reputable. Always ask for the designer price discount and then ask for a nibble more--worst a store can say is no. If the salesperson isn't getting you to the price you want, ask for the manager and nicely ask again. Being ready to purchase at that moment can't hurt either. The web prices I found when shopping for two dozen fixtures were never better than LBG, but I did find some things on line that I didn't see at the stores or which the stores wouldn't order. Websites include www.lumens.com and ylighting.com and lightinguniverse.com. All are fine so far as reliability in my experience. Gracious Home will almost always be more expensive--sometimes ridiculously so, but they have a decent selection on display and it is an okay place to look. But given their prices I don't know why anyone buys lights there.
