Designer for renovation

My wife and I are going to start renovating our brownstone soon. We're looking to hire a designer as a consultant to help with choice of paint, flooring, as well as bathroom and kitchen design. We're looking for somebody who knows how to combine old and new, since our tastes aren't super modern or super old fashioned, and we want to preserve some detail without making it look like a museum. They'd be paid a fee of some sort, but wouldn't be buying furniture for us at this point (we want to wait until the kids get older to get nice furniture). I don't think this is really a contractor or architect thing. Thanks.
