Around January, the snow on the roof from Christmas and New Years was starting to melt and water from the roof started leaking into the bedroom, so I needed to put buckets all over the bedroom to hold the water. She said she'd send someone to fix the roof, but again tried to blame me for it. I told her I hadn't been on the roof since I moved in, because I would only use it after they finished construction, so there's absolutely nothing I could have done to cause a leak. She sent some workers and they sealed it, only to find that in the next snow, around February, the leak had moved to the left side of the bedroom, but still there... Then around mid-march, with the mice, I started seeing cockroaches all over the living room and the kitchen. The land-lady of course, once again said I wasn't cleaning up after myself. Let me say that from the day I moved in, I had a cleaning lady come once a week and clean up for at least 3 hours, which is more time than you'd ever need for a one bedroom apartment. After the mice though, I had her coming 3 times every 2 weeks, so it definitely was clean! I told her I'd move out, because I had mice, roaches, a leaking roof, her crazy random visits and an incomplete roofdeck. She gave me hell, I finally submitted papers to a small claims court to allow me to break my lease and get my deposit back and on the last day, she reluctantly gave me the deposit back, avoiding court. I loved the apartment, but with this crazy experience, I feel like I should at least warn as many people as possible before it gets rented again. Maybe things changed, but at least you should be warned. Good luck! [less]
Oh, I should also add that when I tried to talk to her, phoning her stopped working after she got the first check in the mail. The first few calls I would make each time I wanted something, she'd scream down the phone in Korean at me, then tell me in English that she's "very very busy for you people" and then after I finally started pleading her to at least listen to me, she'd carry on screaming, hang up and ignore my calls for days. After the advice from the guys next door, I started sending her registered mail to report any of the above problems.
Also, although I paid rent at least a week in advance each month, when the check for January was delivered on the 3rd of Jan, because the post was slow because of the holiday, she kept calling twice a day from New Year's day till the third, asking me where her money was! I should have known she'd give me a hard time with the deposit when I wanted to move out...
I hope whoever reads this will benefit from my experience. At least what I learnt from this was never to rent on a walk-up again.
Hmmm. Some rich clients of Frank Lloyd Wright's called him and bitched at him because their fancy-schmancy house was leaking. He listened for about a second or two and then told them "put some buckets out," and he hung up on them.
