Tthe SATC phenomenon has undoubtedly impacted the NY RE market, purchase and rental, in especially neighborhoods that attract young singles. Most of the impact though was 1998-2006 when the HBO series originally aired. I don't think the movies have enough cultural currency to make a difference. Especially since 20 something girls are not that eager to emulate 40 and 50 something women.

Are you saying that SATC was responsible for the housing market in 98-06? You might be on to something, especially with the bubble bursting 2 years after, which would not happen instantly between the 1st movie, re-runs and accounting for people to be slow to respond (especially those with their heads that far up their asses)

Could be a very interesting theory if you explore it further...

im not talking about SATC per se, there's a new show on MTV called 'Downtown Girls.'

oh and on the other side of the hudson, shore rentals are exploding.. can we say Jersey Shore? cannot wait for season 2.

I'm not saying that SATC drove the bubble...of course not. But during the bubble years the city was filled with Carrie (Miranda, Samantha, Charlotte) wanna bes, you saw them everywhere you went out. Now granted many were b&t but the rest had to live somewhere! I also think during this period "coming to New York" was a more popular (its always popular, well maybe not when I got out of school but no choice here)choice among people starting out. I expect this had more to do with the boom that SATC portrayed than the show itself but there was a perceived glamor associated with NYC in the show that sent more then one young lady here with stars in her eyes and dreams of an exciting glamorous career AND her own Mr Big

Girls who watch sex and the city can't afford to eat in the meat packing, let alone live there. hol4, keep watching TV.

IMHO besides Wall Street, few things impacted NYC overall (and therefore RE) more than Friends and Seinfeld. They taught millions of Americans that "regular" people live in NYC.

And Larry David humanized errrrr I mean Davidized Hollywood with Curb .........

"regular" people who keep live ducks and chickens and geese in their apartments and can just take over their grandmother's rent-controlled apartment and have a gaggle of their, um, friends move in without getting slapped with an eviction notice.

Is it too early to start a campaign to protest the closing of Manhattan's only Applebee? Not that anyone's even rumored it's closing, and not that I'm even sure there is an Applebee in Manhattan. I don't get out much.

There's one in that dreadfully pedestrian part of Manhattan called Battery Park City.

Alan there's a Applebee's (or maybe two) in Times Square but I'm inclined to think it doesn't count as they are clearly not going after the local dollar. ("Great idea lets spend thousands of dollars on a vacation in New York City and then eat at the same shitty chain we have all over Florida"). Still boggled over the 23rd street OG and Outback though...

I love the summer after a SATC movie.
Every single girl in the city feels compeled to buy the highest heel/sexy shoe and ramble about.
I love looking at the girls. For me, is simply observational as I am off the market (and not that marketable anyway). Catch and release, catch and release that's the name of the game. This summer the fish look great! Makes my heart hurt to think that any woman would move to Manhattan with the prospects of living the life of SATC. It would appear that the educational system has once again failed to teach the difference between fiction and reality. The good news is that in New York the reality hits you like the smell of fish on Elizabeth Street on a hot August day.

But, in the past decade 2000-2010, shoes have gotten to be really ugly. Uncomfortable and dangerous to wear. What's so hot about watching them wobbling around on 5-6inch heels?
