Discussion about
It is vast. Many beautiful beaches, anchored by well-maintained parks, accessible by good roads. A huge variety of accommodations and activities. Super friendly locals and visitors. Produce is fresh and abundant, lots of gourmet local eats around. And matt, no illegal labo(u)r in sight.

Off topic time - this has what to do with NY RE? Been - or should i say "beeeeen" - meh. one major road in/out - like most summer destinations. typical lake bugs the size of B52s, way way too many richard skulls drunk on their wave runners or motor boats. why cross the border for that - you can get that right in your own backyard.

Bump.

Romary: you're talking about the Muskokas. Great Lakes - endless beaches, much better traffic. Drunks are everywhere in the countryside, but usually drive in the middle of the night or holiday weekends. You have to be observant. As for right in my backyard, Catskills lack beaches and LI/NJ beaches are great but very $$$ and even more congested. The annoying thing is of course the time it takes to get here from NYC.

Ah, that lends color to your reaction. It can be hard as an American living in another native English-speaking country (I glean this from the expat forums I frequent). Easier as a Canadian to enjoy the U.S. rather than the other way around (we can sooooo passive-aggressive-smug-provincial).
