Discussion about
how this stressed stock market is going affect the real estate in NYC
ILMAO this morning remembering this article from Cohen yesterday:
http://www.cnbc.com/id/37982373
The guy basically said everybody should buy now, the market will go up 16% by the end of the year.
Then the following morning, the dow crash 250 points.... :-(
I though this Cohen must be SteveF's cousin or something... :-D
buy and keep losing all your retirement funds.
yay
Its his cousin. No his brother. No his cousin...
Woohoo! we broke 10,000! time to party like its 1999
The largest inidicia of trouble comes from China's declivitous downward revision of growth after a nearly trillion dollar Chinese stimulus. The US stimulus is at tailend and has done nothing to reverse unemployment. The concentration of wealth in America's millionaires has increased to pre-2008 levels and stands at the highest since the early 1900's.
If you are a believer of Reagan's voodoo economics, the "trickle down" theory, America is doing great. If you believe that at 0% interest, record deficits and post stimulus (nee corporate bailouts) that the average American taxpayer is being shafted to a bloody pulp, we are not fine.
In addition 18 million taxpayers in the state of Florida could simultaneously expire.

Regarding Abby, she is ridiculous. She began her career at the Federal Reserve Board, enough said. At every turn she fails to conceive the possibility of a bear market. Of course she is therefore right, occasionally.

lol
all the retirement funds will be wiped out before the dust settles
dont worry the government will bail out the retirment funds and the raise our taxes
Rivrsider, you are correct but off on the timing. Geitner and govt has given you the past 2 yrs to go cash if you can't handle the impending credit implosion. It's like the 99 week unemployment bennies, you've had 2 yrs to lower your sights and start flipping burgers, now we won't feel bad when you're out on the street with your Oliver ppl sunglasses and $2k trousers, the slimming kind.
w67th...does this help or hurt real estate in manhattan...if people have no place to invest will they buy apartments or will they get nervous and not buy?
Abby Joseph Cohen is a women and she is married to "Mad Money" Kramer the orical of nothing.
Stay married to this guy? Got to be an optimist.
Abby Joseph Cohen is a fairly ordinary person. I've seen her stand in line for kosher chinese cuisine in Queens. She's orthodox and not married to Jim Cramer. That said she has not been a star for some time. She does not move moarkets and is rarely heard from.
falco: you are misinformed.
Julia long gone are the days when rising real estate prices helped people save for a down payment on a condo.
not that it matters, but Abby Joseph Cohen is not an Orthodox Jew - she's Conservative. And definitely not married to Cramer. And definitely hasn't moved markets for 10yrs now.
well Abby only knows one market direction UP

I stand corrected
Re: Riversider's clip from a couple of posts above, I must say that it is truly impressive how little Abby Cohen manages to say while talking non-stop for 6 minutes.
Her job is to generate grades for Goldman.
"Her job is to generate grades for Goldman." Ok, here's a grade: C+

Julia, completely azz for NYC re. NYC re is in fact one huge brokerage city. We tell ppl to get rid of old clothes, go into the next bestest, mostest newest bubble... Anything that makes the entire nation pause from their greater asset / newest thing buying craze affects the entire city's money making machine.
Never wavered, never hesitated in terms of where NYC re will head, $500 psf prime. Hey ya get paid to wait with lower rent rates every month, what's the hurry to 'buy?'
"We tell ppl to get rid of old clothes, go into the next bestest, mostest newest "
Still bitter about your upbringing?
nycmatt, where've you been? Don't tell me you lost you login password again?
You didn't answer my question, are you still bitter that you wore clothes as a kid from Goodwill (and people noticed), while also being forced to work making jewelry while you were under age?
ppl should put their hard earned money in real estate not stock market
i also see people renting their condos and co-ops at fairly low prices so I'm going with w67th and continue to rent until prices get down to $500 per sf (i'm probably dreaming but who knows).
Not very long ago at all, people were dreaming that they'd be able to sell their coops for as *much* as $500 psf.
Very true alan, I remember when 99 Jane street started selling at $500F2, some thought they were dreaming....
wow PPlayer - that BP article is absolutely terrifying, especially as the daughter of a geologist. thanks for posting.
>not that it matters, but Abby Joseph Cohen is not an Orthodox Jew - she's Conservative. And definitely not married to Cramer. And definitely hasn't moved markets for 10yrs now<
True true and LOL.
She actually belongs to the same small conservative shul in eastern queens that Donnie Deutsch does.
It's where I grew up as well.
10 years ago or so Abby Cohen was cheerleading stocks as the Dow passed 10,000 for the first time.
She's a very smart research analyst (with a history of shilling for Drexel Burnham Lambert, and GS)
Look at someone putting their investment opinions out there, who is also actively managing money: John Hussman is calling for a recession, with a stock market low in a year, and a real estate low in four years:
http://www.hussmanfunds.com/wmc/wmc100628.htm
I agree. everyone has opinions. Show me how she's putting money to work and the track record. Hugh Hendry said this more eloquently..
play on PPlayer
good post--scary link that i hope turns out not to be
Donnie Deutsch is a conservative jew...wow, hasn't he been married like 5 times and has had children from 6 different women...maybe i should stop reading national enquirer!
Was Abbie Cohen one of his wives?
Donnie Deutch always wanted Abbie to put on her cheerleading outfit and wave the pom poms in the bedroom
bad image. I'm going blind.
Julia, Larry King's a conservative jew....I think he's got that way beat.
And I suspect your confusing conservative judaism with political conservatism.
i thought conservative jews were, conservative people.
No, thats not at all what that means.
In fact, most are pretty liberal.
who's on first?
No, it's just a tier of one of the denominations of Judaism, you have;
Hasidic
Orthodox
Conservative
Reform
with subsets, not unlike Christianity has Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Protestant, Baptist, etc.
It's more about how strict one is following, I'd stick jewish conservatism to compare in this regard with christianity on a level somewhere between Protestant and Roman Catholic.
you left out reconstructionist.
I left out a lot, trying to keep it real simple
The difference between reform and orthodox is best summed up by the following joke.
Woman gets a porsche and goes to an orthodox rabbi and says rebbe can you say a bracha on my porsche. The rebbe confused, says, "what's a porsche?"
The woman leaves and heads over to a reform rabbi and asks teh same question, " Rabbi can you say a bracha for my porsche?" to which the Rabbi replies," what's a bracha?"
> It's more about how strict one is following
Actually, its not. Observence doesn't make it the levels, there is literally a different rule set for each.
Orthodox follows full halacha/shulchan aruch (a law set), conservative does not, and reform is an updated rule set (that I'm not very familiar with). Whether you are following the rule set or not doesn't define the sects, its the rule set that does. You can be observant conservative or non-observant conservative, for instance.
and, btw, Hasidic *is* orthodox. The subdivisions of orthodox, like lubovitch, are generally just sects based on where they came from in Europe.
So which ones are the good jews, and which ones are the bad jews?
And are there Country Club conservative jews and Trailer Park conservative jews, just like in the GOP?
And which are the ones who have to wear 18th century costumes?
Yes SWE, you always have to be such a yekke (sayin that with love),just keepin it real simple for Julia to get the jist.
At an Orthodox wedding, the mother of the bride is pregnant.
At a Conservative wedding, the bride is pregnant.
At a Reform wedding, the Rabbi is pregnant.
At a Reconstructionist wedding, the rabbi and her wife is pregnant.
And the Dow is still under 10K ... is that permanent?
riversider...that's funny, truthskr10..ditto
> And are there Country Club conservative jews and Trailer Park conservative jews, just like in the
> GOP?
Nah, because they don't like Jews in either....
