Sorry -- I don't think there are any restaurants in the West 40s.

Virgils BBQ is close by.

Or free hot dogs at Rudy's.

I second John's. Also Carmine's (italian, big portions), Vynl (diner).
There's also a bunch of stuff on 9th in high 40s/50s.

Julia,

My favorite, reasonably-priced restaurant in the theater district (9th and 43rd Street) is Zuni. Interesting, delicious, different new American cuisine. Good-sized portions. Reservations a must in the evening. It's a New Yorker restaurant - off the tourist track. Check it out:

I like Bond 45. Fresh Mozzarella sampler thingy? Yum. I tookmy 17 yr old unadventurous nephew there and they happily obliged preparing "plain spaghetti" and marinara for him.

Bond 45 sounds great but with 8 year old twins i don't think i can handle the mess of marinara on them. Everyone is giving great ideas for me to go to these restaurants without the twins.

If you like thai - there are a ton of great thai places in that hood on 9th avenue.
