Ikea has chairs that fold really flat, cost around $10 and look nice -- won't last forever, but neither will your extra guests.

Gracious Home does have some really beautiful ones with upholstered seats that are comfortable enough to spend an evening in. I saw them at the newest store in Chelsea just a few weeks ago.

People always leave folding chairs behind in Bryant Park, and on some parts of Broadway in the gutter. You can just take a bunch of those.

Are we all in summer mode? Funny question, since I spent 5 mins of a hectic morning looking at lawn chairs. Not-made-in-China is somewhat important to me, so I noticed some French-made lawn chairs in Gracious Home this morning. I am not in need of lawn chairs, these seemed decent ($$$ though) but sharp-lookin' La Fuma(?) One can bargain hard with Gracious Home esp. late in the summer, so something to keep in mind.

nyc10023: Yes, we have some of those fancy French chairs at the house. Nice. Bargain Gracious Home down hard, they own a lot of R.E. up on Third Ave.

Alan: There's also food left-overs in the gutter in Times Square. Gotta get 'em before the pigeons grab 'em. Bryant Park is well-kept these days, but you can get maybe a half a sandwich out of the garbage cans.

Truth, I've tried the food left-over from the gutter in Times Square. It's a good gig -- no competition -- but the problem is it's concept food, and I can't digest concept food. Let the visitors from Flyover comb those gutters. But just because I always have to find the silver lining in every cloud, I'd like to point out that at least you don't have to fight seagulls for the concept food that you find in Times Square's gutters. Right?

Surf was kind of flat today. :(

Pigeons are little weensy pests, by the way. You could probably win, or at least get to eat 55% of whatever food you claim. Not so seagulls, which are the size of woolly mammoths but a lot hungrier.

All true, Alan. But I have seen those really fat Manhattan pigeons. Would give up anything I have that they want, without a fight. And, they plop out the biggest poops.

The flat surf is my B.F.s dept. He's the surfer -- I gave up the "SURF'S UP!!!" years ago.

I'm certainly not a surfer, but ... I want some ocean in my ocean, y'know?

$300-$400 or less is not a lot of money for six (good-looking, comfortable, long-lasting) chairs, but you might find this post from apartmenttherapy.com and all the links on it helpful:
