Discussion about
Hi all. Wondering if anyone can give me 1.) an estimate of reasonable moving costs (details below), 2.) recommendations of great movers. I'm moving from a 1 1/2 bed (850 sqft)brownstone apartment, 3rd floor walkup. Moving to a 3rd floor walkup limestone apartment about 10-12 blocks away. Brooklyn. We have enough stuff to fill an 850sf apartment, but no unusually large/heavy furniture. We will do all packing and unpacking, only want someone to physically move us out of the old place and in to the new. Move is late August/early September. In the past I've used: uhaul or 'man with van', but I'm ready for a real moving company :) Thanks for your thoughts.

i just moved a 3 br for $1000 in brooklyn. same movers moved me 3 times before. licensed and insured.

if you use "real" movers from manhattan, you're looking at $3K based on what everyone has quoted in the past.

Flat Rate will probably charge you 1000 and they are good.

don't like flat rate as they seem to wind up more expensive because they are charging by piece. if you don't have so much then they may work. i remember last time i moved, used them, but moved a lot of boxes on my own and just used for big pieces.

Thanks for the responses BrooklynHeights and Mikev. I called around and got some quotes. Now I'm choosing between two movers: 1st mover gave a flat rate within my budget, based upon an over-the-phone estimate. 2nd mover gave an hourly rate and estimate of four hours for the move, which, if accurate, would be cheaper than the 1st mover's quote by $100. I'm torn between the safety of the first mover's 'flat rate', and the money saved if the 2nd mover's quote is actually accurate. Oh, the first mover will send 2 guys, the second mover will send 4 guys. What do you think?

just saw your response. the guy is Slava and his # 917-803-9497. he has at least 4 crews. fortunately, the last 2 moves i got the same 2 guys that are "kings" of moving. the other guys are great too.

last time i moved out of a 3 br in an elevator bldg to a 2nd floor walkup. he sent 5 guys at around $100-120 per hour. with the tip, it was approx $1200. because the move involved a coop, i had to pay for the coop's insurance which was an additional $100.

Oz movers is quite reasonable, cost me about 40% less than the flat-rate quote
