Discussion about
has anyone found reasonable, secure parking outside of manhattan? we drive up here from SC but do not need our car while we are here. parking garages around us are astronomical ($35 a day for our suv) and hoping you can suggest a better alternative. thanks in advance for your help.

call a couple of the major companies (ICON, etc.) and ask for their best price throughout NYC. I did that and got a garage on 57th street for $200/month ($167/month before tax). My car is not a SUV, so your price may be higher but it is still not a bad price. These companies have several garages in NYC and usually at 1-2 of their locations.

Highly recommend this site. Was able to renegotiate at my own garage based on it. Out of town visitors love it.

thanks kar3f, we'll try that. actually 57th would be perfect as we now live in the sutton place area. we thought we had called all the major companies but perhaps we didn't try that one. and sometimes we are only in town for a couple of weeks at a time.

I have found parking cheaper on the west side. The location I parked at was 57th between 9th and 10th avenue, but they should give you a couple of choices. You would need to sign up for monthly. Do not tell them it is temporary....

we were hoping to find something without a monthly contract as we are usually never here for two months running.

Try Queens - right over the 59th Street Bridge. On nice days you can walk. Otherwise there is a bus that stops on the northeast corner of 60th St. that goes across. The place we used to use is closed, but there are others.

There is a garage by the E train at Court Square in Long Island City - you are 1 subway stop to Sutton, and a 10 minute drive over the 59th St. Bridge. Actually 2 garages, one right behind the Court House and 1 right next to it. $10 per day weekdays, not sure about weekends.

Try parking at Newark Aiport or at one of the NJ train stations, then just hop NJT into Penn Station. Minor hassle=major savings.

we did look into newark and it was cheaper than what we have been paying but not a bargain. our thought today is to rent a car here in Hilton Head and drive it up and drop off in the city. when it is time to go back, we'll do the opposite. found a cheap rate and though it won't be as comfortable as our own vehicle, this might be the best solution. we don't have a firm schedule when we are in ny and like the flexibility of not having to fly which we did most of last year. we are still trying to finish a gut renovation.
