I've had an apt in Wash Heights for years. Yes, and don't forget about "Hudson Heights":http://www.streeteasy.com/nyc/sales/hudson-heights-manhattan which is a very nice part of WH along the river.

any idea about schools in the neighborhood? We have a 5yr old and looking for a place near a good public school

Not sure about schools up there, but with the cloisters there, it's an ideal family locale; I've rented up there for a few years and lately there's been an influx of youngish families.
