washing machine... again

- I HAD #1 and did not like it very much.
- I now HAVE #3 w/hose attached to lint trap in a water bucket thingy. It's the NEXT BEST THING to venting it to the outside.

Be prepared for the humidity and do not close your laundry closet door all the time when drying. Summer = bad / Winter = good! ;)

And, you have so much more choices in the type and size and cost of models and brands compared to the ventless/condenser dryers that are only 24" wide.

suck it up and get the ventless... i find that it actually reduces wrinkles bc there is a but more steam in the machine.

I believe the newer ventless ones are better-engineered than the older ones.

I had the vent-to-water-bucket arrangement and found it to be useless.

Stick to choices 1 & 2, IMO.

I have a ventless already, the drying time is long and oftentimes ineffective. It generates a good deal of heat anyway. The load capacity is small for the washer and dryer. I really just do not like it.

I'm leaning toward the vented unit unless someone says the larger combo units (washer/dryer in 1 unit) (see LG) works well.

the combos are not good. You have access to one feature at a time (wash or dry) so no drying one load while the other washes. The Vertical units take up more volume but use the same sqft as a single unit. Its not like you are going to use the space saved above the single unit. The drying time takes a little longer but the washers are great (i have bosch). I use mine for gym stuff, sheets and towels and other things like that... i send the rest out anyway! Bonus in my condo as i looked at it

Does anyone have experience with Asko washers and dryers? They doesn't seem as popular as Bosch, but I have seen them in a few condos.

I have the Askos. I believe the ones I have are the 2006-2007 models. The washer and dryer is very basic. Few controls and options.

The washer is too basic for washing. Sometimes the washer finishes without completely finishing the drain and spin cycle - leaving a washer full of soaking-heavy-wet clothes that must be either "hand winged" dryer or to be washed again in the washer and hope that this time it is properly drained and spin-dryed.

The dryer takes a long-long time to finish and puts out enough BTU as to be used as a heater.

They're HE (high-efficiency) units and clean the cloths well enough.

Drives me crazy that manufacturers never create apt size appliances that work excellently. I think that the Manhattan marketplace alone would be a gold mine for a smart manufacturer.

I had a 2005 model Asko washer and vented dryer in another residence. I thought the washer had tons of options. I could set whatever water temperature I wanted (down to the degree) and had more cycle choices than I knew what to do with. My only real complaint is that the spin cycle is loud (sounds like an airplane) and can leave clothes very wrinkled. I had to wash everything in the gentle cycle.

I loved the dryer. Put the clothes in, shut the door, and then it automatically sensed when the clothes were dry. Worked every time and usually took less than an hour to dry.

My energy bills went down $15/month versus the old standalone washer-dryer I had. I would buy an Asko again for this apartment. (I bought an Asko dishwasher based on positive experiences with the brand and the industry-leading warranty.)

i just bought the ventless stackable Miele and have been amazed how much i like it. it is incredibly quiet, relatively fast, and does an amazing job washing the clothes. in fact, the spin dry cycle is so good that it cuts the drying time down considerably. in other house i have big maytags and i have to say i like these machines better. the dryer does produce heat as it is ventless but not nearly the problem i expected. the only downside was the pricetag.

I hzve just bought a ventless Bosch- being delivered tomorrow. My understanding is that it works great but that moisture collects in the gasket of the washer and you have to wipe it out every time, otherwise mildew! This seems preferable to the apt filling with steam. In the country I have big Maytags from 1975!

Thank you for the feedback on the Asko washers and dryers ProperService and Lad; I'm glad that some of it is positive.

I was also glad to hear the positive review of Miele from Rosina - I've seen them in stores, and it sounds like a brand to keep in mind.

LoftyDreams, good luck with your new Bosch machines. Maybe you can give us an update once you are up and running.

And I agree, Dwell, I'm surprised there are not more choices and/or better options for urban dwellers.

lofty, I can confirm that you are correct on the mildew issue with the bosch.

regarding the miele rosina - what is the load capacity? would you say small, med or large?

Those "buckets" for venting are illegal in NYC, so this isn't really an option at all.
