gcondo: Here's a current example. I think they did a pretty nice job.

We can start a yahoo group and go from there. This whole incident has upset me. I feel like we've been a small family over the past few years - and like family not everyone gets along but it's all in good fun. I am not of course talking about the troll

I started posting on SE long before I even thought about getting a real estate license, back when it was a little baby discussion board that hardly anybody knew about. Back when every post was anonymous, which was true for a long time, I think. I can't even remember how many years ago that was, but it was a couple of homes ago for me.

It's just getting so unpleasant and weird here generally, any specific incidents aside...

This used to be a lively and WITTY place to post and to read. I can remember laughing out loud at really clever posts, but that seems like a long time ago.

I only post over my real name now--I never use a screen name--because 1. I notice discussion boards with real names (or moderators) are more civil and useful; 2. if I don't want to put my name on it, I should shut up; and 3. in theory I might get some business, although highly unlikely, as the people who participate on this board are more interested in attacking brokers than hiring them.

I feel obligated to post because I still learn a few things here, and it just feels wrong to take and never give anything back.

FSBOs can advertise on SE no problem. In fact, I routinely tell FSBOs that they can, and that they should, if they are not going to hire a broker.

So thanks for reading, cats, I needed to get all that off my chest.

The board is better in the last couple of days. The moaners just need to leave and all will be well. Good to see W81st and hear from the brokers without all the nasty bs.

kharby: congrats on your company's new office in brooklyn. Any thoughts on a bottom in brooklyn. I suppose the glut of new apts led to the decision to open there. Do you think other brokerages will follow you there. I hear the boomers are moving there in droves. Which brings to mind some peculiar images if you think of the old geezers (i'm a boomer) in the schermerhorn lounge hanging with new hiptsters.

IMO, even if a new bd was started, trolls will still probably appear & someone would have to take the responsibility to monitor the bd & kick them off. That's alotta work. It's very time consuming to run a board & I'm just grateful that SE does it. I used to post on another bd, but the trolls took it over, destroyed it & so the bd was closed down. Running & managing a bd is harder than it looks, so kudos to SE.

in a yahoo group you can make it private and people have to join. Whoever creates it administrates it

Inonada... Agreed. There's a lot of good at SE. We've gone almost three days with no troll problems. SE say they're committed to make it a better site. They also have asked for our suggestions and cooperation. I say let's take SE on their word and do our part. We'll see.

cccharley: A private group would shirley die quickly. Snooze. Fresh meet is life.

We love our friends at SE. This is merely adolescence. A few awkward dates, a new car, and some friends coming out is par for the course. In the immortal words of Ms. Fleming: Whether to kill yourself or not is one of the most important decisions a teenager can make.

Although everyone apparently hates my suggestion, I think hierarchical threads would go a long way to addressing the problem.

its not easy starting a new blog or forum from scratch. SE did a great job with theirs and they seem to be putting time and money into moderating it. Trolls are just a side effect of a site that has succeeded in getting a fast growing community together around the main content. I dont post here as much, but I do check it at least once a day when Im working. So I dont see the stuff that more frequent users may see. I still give props to SE staff at the quality of the site they created..its not easy.
