Discussion about The Corinthian at 330 East 38th Street in Murray Hill
Any thought on why this building is priced at $900-1000 per sq foot unless you are on a very high floor. I am not saying that it is cheap but it is much less than other condos in the city. Good building with a pool. Low taxes and maintenance. Good light and views for most apartments. Is it the location as it is around 7-10 minutes walk from the subway?

That is a long haul to the subway, and there are no urban conveniences nearby. No supermarket or restaurants and very few delis, cleaners, etc. That said, at least when my girlfriend at the time lived there 17 years ago, the place was filled models, actresses, and various other sorts that did not need to worry about waking up in the morning or where the subway might be located. Perhaps that contributed to the demise of that relationship. It does make the pool even more enticing.
There's a supermarket 2 blocks away and a regular market across the street. It's not that far from the tunnel and not really in a great area, so that would be my guess re: pricing. Also, the building feels like a mini-city/large hotel, which isn't what everyone wants to feel when they get home.
It's right outside the midtown tunnel and it's congested most of the time and you can smell the car exhausts when you are walking on the street. My doctor is in that building and he is always complaining about the traffic going into the parking lot since it's on the same block as traffic turning from 2nd ave to the tunnel and traffic coming out of the tunnel to go cross town.
There are usually many units for sale or rent which keeps the prices down. Nice building overall but it is very large.
the tunnel is the main thing. When my parents decided to move to the city back in the late 80s they looked at the building and decided they didn't want to live above the tunnel. They bought during construction at the Monarch
Lots of doctors live there I think who work at NYU.
As a follow up to the above comment, I would like to say my family and I had very few issues with the actual building management. The Corinthian is a great place to live, especially with those that have kids. But given its a condo you have to be very careful on who the owner of your individual unit is.
