Discussion about
As Street Easy "president," I hereby endorse Carl Paladino for governor of New York. Carl will do a lot of great things for New York. For instance, through his proposed Dignitiy Corps, unemployed and poor peopel will be sent to live in unused state prisons to learn hygene. No longer will you have to sit next to a smelly person on the subway who last took a bath during the Eisenhower administration. Carl will take over the Ground Zero mosque site through eminent domain. And nobody will mess with good old Governor Carl since he has a handgun permit and carries heat everywhere he goes. And finally, Carl will keep us etnertained throughout his term as governor through his colorful e-mails.

"has paladino offered any concrete suggestions to accomplish what you are supporting?"

He said he would cut $20 billion from Medicare, because NY gives goldplated Medicare benefits compared to other states. Visit his website.

"He said he would cut $20 billion from Medicare"

He certainly did NOT, as mediCARE is a federal program that NYS can't touch. You probably mean mediCAID. The ENIRE Medicaid budget for 2010-2011 fiscal year is only $11.6B dollars. If you add in state money spent on public hosptials, you get to $13.9B. If you add mental health you get to $17.6B. So even if he cut 100% of state spending on providing health care to the poor, he would not get $20B in savings. Also, it would not really help our economy.

I've been giving Paladino's offensive statements about The Gays a lot of thought, and it occurred to me that the only way he can really neutralize the situation is by going to a confab of The Gays and making antisemitic remarks. Oh, and replacing campaign pix of himself with those of his allegedly "Gay" nephew. Otherwise he loses the election.

NY State spends twice as much on Medicaid, per capita, than the national average:

http://www.bcnys.org/whatsnew/2006/0113medicaid.htm

$2,165 per resident in 2006, and it has surely gone up since then.

Yes, New York State really can save $20 billion by cutting Medicaid spending by $1000 per resident, and that would still keep us above the national average for Medicaid spending per capita.

If I was a rich businessman, I'd probably vote to keep the status quo that made me rich.

The Tea Party is for regular people like me.

"New York State really can save $20 billion by cutting Medicaid spending by $1000 per resident"

I just showed you the New York State budget, from a New York State website, that shows Medicaid spending is ONLY $11.6 billion. How can he come up with $20B in savings from $11.6B in expenses?

Clearly you cannot do math, either. Since if you multiply the $486 in the article by the total population of New York State, you get 19.3MM (in 2006) * $486 = $9.4 billion. That sounds like less than half of $20 Billion.

On page 68 of the document you linked to, there's a big pie chart and it shows that total Medicaid spending is $52.6 billion for the current FY.

So Carl Paladino's plan to cut $20 billion of that is viable.

To quote the official NY State budget:

"The Medicaid program is
financed jointly by the State,
the Federal government, and
local governments (including
New York City). New York’s
Medicaid spending is projected
to total approximately $52.6
billion in 2010-11, including
the local contribution."

Carl as Gov?

I thought Pataki would be the worst NY Gov. I would ever see in my life time. Three terms later I was convinced that NY had the dumbest population north of Texas.
Now the State that brought you Governer Magoo now offers, for your pleasure, Carl Palidino.

Is NY a sad state? The only thing I have good to say is at least it's not florida.

Bob, you are a fricking moron. The STATE spends $14.2B, per the EXACT SAME PAGE, next year. 62% comes from the FEDERAL government, the rest from the counties or cities.

"In 2010-11, the expected contributions are $14.2
billion from the State, $31.1 billion from the Federal government and $7.3 billion from
local governments."

You are so stupid.

"Carl's vision for $20 billion cuts in Medicaid optional benefits - and savings achieved by attacking waste, fraud and abuse in the system - will save New York State taxpayers $10 billion in the first year, making a 30-40% cut in county taxes possible. "

Carl's website clearly says that some of the tax savings come from the state level and some from the local level.

You're the one who's "so stupid." It doesn't matter to me if tax savings come from local tax or state tax... I just don't want to pay the taxes.

You are in fact stupid. Again, the website YOU cited:

"In 2010-11, the expected contributions are $14.2 billion from the State, $31.1 billion from the Federal government and $7.3 billion from local governments."

The TOTAL the state and local governments spend is $21.5B. To cut $20B, that leaves only $1.5B. The problem is, the Federal Govt has a matching formula. The poorer the state per capita, up to a point, the more they match. But the key is they MATCH state spending dollar per dollar.

The fact is the Federal government MATCHES funds and thus pays for at least 50% of each state's budget and at MOST 83%. NYS is at 62%.

Our match - if it were enough - woudl make the total medicaid budget maybe $3.5B. So you are talking cuting the budget from $52.6B to $3.5B - something that would likely run afoul of medicaid rules under even a GOP administration. But lets say it was ok with HHS- it would be a cut of $93%. Spending THAT little on medicare would mean we would get zero from the Federal govt, and thus would completely abolish medicaid and thus health care for millions of poor New Yorkers, most of them children.

Not gonna get my vote.

Looking good for Carl! Down by only between 21 and 35 points in the latest four polls.

What I love is that 24% of eligible voters expect to vote for Paladino, but only 11% of voters had a "favorable view" of him.

BTW, I do think Carl meant $20B by INCLUDING the reduction in the Federal match...so the state could cut spending by $10B, which would mean $10B less from the feds. Loverly.
