Discussion about
i had the maytag brand at 1 northside piers and really think it's terrible (makes my clothes fuzzy) and would like to replace it with a better brand. am thinking of a steam model and it needs to be stackable to fit in the W/D closet. any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks.

Bosch, LG, Miele in no particular order. I don't know what the best American brand is.

I have Miele in my apartment, and Bosch in my house. The Bosch does a fine job (and this model at least is larger and probably would not fit in your closet), but the Miele is all around great. Also, you need to check your wiring. Many brands need 110v for the washer, and 220v for the dryer. Your Maytag may have a single 220v plug. The Miele has a box (for another couple hundred dollars) so both run off a single 220v outlet.

Whirpool! I've had only Whirlpool laundry machines since 1973. They've lasted on average 10-12 years. I have them serviced occasionally but they never break down. They have a good range of prices and features. Can't ask for more than that.

Maytag is owned by Whirlpool. In the NYC luxury market, an appliance manufacturer is generally well-regarded for one particular appliance: Wolf or Viking for stoves, Subzero for refrigerators, Miele for dishwashers. If anyone bothers to do the research on the product history of Asko W/Ds and their reliability, I think that ASKO deserves to be the acknowledged leader in W/Ds. My Asko W/D has run twelve years without a single service call.

Go with the Miele. Replaced Asko recently with Miele. PC Richards sells both. Elgot (Lex/68) will sell at the same price plus add a second year warranty.

sounds like the miele or asko are the lead runners though bosch and lg are possibilities too. in either case this helps narrow down a few brands to focus my research on. thanks all for the helpful suggestions.

To be honest...most people that know appliances will say all these washer dryers use the same inner parts so it's about customer service and price point next. According to Consumer Reports LG has the least amount of major repairs/complaints for the big brands however, Estate & Roper actually score better.
