Discussion about
I am looking to renovate my 2 bedroom apartment. This is my first time doing renovation and I supposed I need an architect (at least the board require me to). I have never worked with an architect before, just curious how everyone here finds his/her architect. Can anyone recommand or let me know where to look? And how much do they charge? Thank you.

for any service, the best place to find professionals is a referral from someone you know. Then meet with the architect and contact other references to see what they have to say. Or you go to a site like angieslist if you aren't getting anywhere through your friends and colleagues.
As far as cost, there are 3 models: Cost+, where the architect will charge a percentage of the renovation's costs - somewhere on the order of 12-20%. Hourly - pretty self explanatory. Flat fee - also self explanatory. Generally in the cost+ the architect will be pretty involved throughout the whole process, down to helping pick out some finishes, source materials, and bid out the work to contractors. With the flat fee and hourly you work out with them what they will do, though it should include some intermediate and final inspections to make sure the work is being done according to the plans and to code.

Hello Whocan,

You might or might not need an architect depending on the work that is being done. It also depends on the work to decide on which architect to choose. If you only need drawings for example I would hire an inexpensive architect. If you need the architect to design and watch over the project thats another story. If you can tell me what kind of project it is I can steer you in the right direction.
