Discussion about
I'm looking at a rental apartment (big landlord in NYC). I looked at the bed bug disclosure and they had an infestation in 2 units on the floor I am looking at in Dec 09 / Jan 10. Nothing has been reported since. I like the apartment but unsure whether to move forward. Curious to hear what others think... Is it a show-stopper? Is it enough to get an inspection pre-movein? Thanks in advance.

You will never know which buildings truly have had infestations even if they don't disclose it. At least this building is honest. It shows trustworthiness. Nevertheless a dog sniffing inspection will put your mind at ease either way (and in any building whether infestations have been disclosed or not).

Interesting perspective. I'm leaning towards agreeing, yet can't get it out of my mind.

Who do you expect to pay for the inspection?

dim_bones... uh, i expected the landlord to, and they agreed / are doing it. but, then again, they only have 17 apartment towers in NYC and you only work on exclusives for the really really big, baller landlords.

I think you're a liar. Tell us what ll paid for your bedbug inspection at your request. Even then I won't believe you, but I'd like to see how far you'll take this.

Rhino, why didn't you just stay in your last rental instead of seeking to move?

Ps, you've obviously frequented this board many times, but I don't recognize your handle. Why invent one for this post? Who are you really?

bedbugs123 now that we've established you have bad taste in literature, why not tell us which landlord was so generous to have decided to pay for rosco the bedbug sniffing dog. do they do that for every tenant?

also, it's pretty clear from this that you reached out around 4pm today for advice. at this point it was clear you had not gotten an "inspection pre-movein"

but here:

at 8:40 pm, you state that your prospective landlord had agreed to/are doing it. I'm having a hard time believing that you managed to get this agreed to between 5-8pm on a friday night. on top of that fact that i think the rest of it is bullshit anyway.

Maybe stevejhx will lender his bedbug sniffing cats if bedbugs123 (aka Rhino86) will just apologize for the "gay translating accountant" comments.

If the guy's going to rent a $6K apartment, isn't it worth the landlord to pretent?

your right. why don't they just agree to provide maid service for the duration of the lease as well? or for a lap dance girl on his birthday?

i know the bedbug disclosure law. IF this was as big a landlord as he states ("17 apartment towers") they would obviously fill out the disclosure form. part of that form requires the landlord to state whether the bedbugs had been been subject to irradication measures or not. Again, such a major landlord would obviously have treated their bedbugs. So why in hell would they appease one renter by paying for an "inspection pre-movein"? Answer, they would not, and should not.

I think this was just another troll post, like most of the posts here. C'mon, "bedbugs123"?

OP here. Not a troll. I'd just prefer to not post who the landlord was. We ultimately did not take the unit but it has been rented.

To me, yes, this is a dealbreaker. Bedbugs are a nightmare. A very long, very expensive nightmare.

Having a LL who has (admitted to) successfully dealing with BBs before, would be better than one who has either not dealt with them at all, or (more likely) is lying and saying there has not been a problem...

hones, in case you care, the landlord was stonehenge. they were very willing to do an inspection over the weekend. but we still walked because i didn't like the fact that it wasn't disclosed upfront

prefer not to reveal who i rented from ultimately, but luxury building in the upper upper west side (80s / 90s).

hones. the backdrop is i explicitly asked the management agent during the initial viewing whether there were any bedbug issues in the building. he said there were not. then, at lease signing, they slipped in a bedbug disclosure form with clear notes that there had been an infestation in an adjacent unit. i flipped out, they wanted to make sure they didn't lose the fish off the hook, so voila, they did the weekend inspection to try to get me comfortable with the situation. didn't work, but i applaud their response and believe it was an honest mistake on the agent's part (i hope).

any more questions?
