Brownstoner.com is a great source. Ask your client to check out various renovation blogs hosted on brownstoner.com - especially Windsor Terrace, Albemarle and Huntington (sp?) All 3 owners seem happy with their contractors and I especially like the preservation-mindedness of their contractors.
There are a lot of RE-obsessed people on the site, and I would bet that the audience has seen your client's house.
