Half a billion a year in lost tax revenue for NY state. True, impossible to really tell a number, but if this story is true and as widespread as it looks, the number is quite likely light. I never post articles but can't believe nobody posted this one. Question is, will there be any efforts to jail and collect or will this just Rangel away. "Bars, restaurants and clubs are cheating New York state and its cities out of hundreds of millions of dollars a year in sales tax, according to confidential sources who have investigated the mat" "Even more troubling is that authorities in Albany know what's going on but have been unwilling -- or unable -- to do anything to stop it." "How does this tax scam work? Instead of simply not collecting tax on their business, restaurants and others are said to be using high-tech cash register devices and computer software to make a percentage of their sales disappear from their records" "And when the sales are voided by these smart registers -- and wiped clean from backup computers' memories -- not only is the state cheated out of sales tax but the establishment at which the sale was made gets to keep it." "A number of these salesmen referred to the technology as a "dump switch" or a "zapper," although others said a code needed to be put into the register -- like "two fries and three beers" -- to get the machine to void and hide a purchase. Some salesmen, according to this source, even offered to crash the restaurant's hard drive -- with all its recorded transactions -- if a state tax audit was threatened." http://www.nypost.com/p/news/business/today_special_scam_dodges_in_sales_6PcQkUthfPabdCpDElx0XJ/0 [less]
jeezz sorry it's not a bank story......tough crowd.
Whatever the underlying value of the story (and it may just be true), linking to a NY Post article is a buzz and discussion kill because it is such an untrustworthy rag. I respect the National Enquirer more (especially on sex scandals).
so are these registers legal or are they just not illegal?
"untrustworthy rag" is a relative term. nytimes runs a lot of blatant bs, and relies on the self importance of its reader base of enlightened idiots to get away with it, until explicitly called out.
investigative reporting is investigative reporting. do you have issues with john crudele's track record? do you have personal knowledge of this situation that leads you to dispute the accuracy of this story?
i like the post on some levels (ok, i wouldn't buy it, but i'll certainly read it, and i've often thought that a wonderful job for a crazy creative type would be to write headlines for the paper, although the headline writers may very well be sick unto death of their jobs).
and i find that the enquirer has scooped many other sources.
read everything with a critical eye, try to find the sources for the numbers, make your own decisions. source quality definitely is very important, but sometimes some very interesting things are unearthed by the scorned.
