Discussion about
House Republican Spending Cuts Target Programs For Children And Pregnant Women Today, the Appropriations Committee — chaired by Rep. Hal Rogers (R-KY) — released the specific cuts that House Republicans are proposing to get below Ryan’s cap. Of course, the cuts consist of reductions to common GOP bogeymen like the National Endowment for the Arts and Amtrak. But the House Republicans have a... [more]

"Republicans Want to Kill and Poison Women/ Babies "

I actually read this more that Republicans want parents to be free to poison their babies (or children under 6). The Republicans themselves aren't doing the poisoning according to the above, they are just letting the poisoning happen and not interfering. Limited government. Parental control.

im sure that libertarians have always shunned help from their poison control centers when their children have been accidentally poisoned

Gotta start cutting somewhere. Or would you prefer rather than nearly 50% of your paycheck going to one tax or another, your rate be raised closer to 80%?

Maybe people should figure out how they would pay for their children before they start having babies.

people generally have children when they are relatively young and expecting future gains in income. if all people based their current child bearing decisions on the likelihood of future increases in income, and used a rational economic model for deciding whether or not to have children, demographics would change dramatically and the value of your LIC condo would collapse.

I know how to save money: Make the subway zone based. The more you travel, the more you pay. This, however, would cause the value of LIC condos to fall as people move to Manhattan to avoid paying the extra train fare.

Socialist, interesting proposition. The current structure is a corporate subsidy, allowing greedy Manhattan businesses to import cheap outer-boro labor at the expense of Manhattan residents who don't get the same relative discount transit but have to pay higher real estate prices. Additionally, this subsidy encourages illegal immigration to the outer boros and allows them to keep more money in order to send it out of the country to their families abroad, instead of reinvesting the money in the U.S. and in pension funds for retired transit workers. Ideally, transit workers should refuse to transport people from the outer boros until they agree to pay more for their fares. No Blood For Oil!

Virtually every subway system in America has a zone based system, as do NJ Transit, LIRR, and Metro North.

And yes, I know it's stupid aboutready, but I like anything that lowers property values in LIC. Hey, that reminds me: I just thought of a GREAT place where we can store spent nuclear fuel rods from nuclear power plants...

"Gotta start cutting somewhere. Or would you prefer rather than nearly 50% of your paycheck going to one tax or another..."

99.99% of Americans don't pay anywhere near 50% of their TOTAL income in taxes, and none pay 50% of even their MARGINAL income in taxes.

yes, but under a zone based system, LIC residents would liekly pay more than someone who travels further within the confines of Manhattan since Queens would be in a different fare boundary.

The way to enact this is to have the transit workers refuse to pick up people in the outer boros. Socialist, you need to lead this effort.

The highest tax bracket is 36% so technically ZERO people pay 50% of their income in taxes.

aboutready, your comment is devoid of reality. By someone's early to mid-20s, they know if they have a decent, stable job or not. You shouldn't excuse irresponsible life decisions and expect everyone else to pay for them.

LICcomm, have you moved on from severe autism to utter derangement? By someone's early to mid-20s, they have grand plans of finishing their dues-paying and working their way up the management ladder. Are they supposed to "know" that corporate downsizing, earnings stagnation, or a slow death of sub-inflation annual salary "increases" is on the schedule?

LICcomm, you're following an old script. Right now you're supposed to demonize school teachers and unions. Later in the year it will be those old people who are sucking us dry. Soon enough, the GOP will get back to the jews. But the "welfare queens" sound bytes and bumper-sticker phrases are from several years ago. Willie Horton, too.

As jason points out, no one even has a marginal tax rate of 50%, much less an effective rate that high.

Again, pay attention: it's the COMBINED tax bite of federal, state, local, FICA, Unemployment, and everything else that's a government-mandated bite out of my paycheck.

Yes, it's the combined actual taxation that matters, but none of it is too high, except on the middle classes. Taxes need to be raised radically on the criminal classes, and their trusts need to be busted, especially the dynasty trusts, and every similar weasly exception needs to be closed up. Like that pass-through gifting nonsense, even though it's probably useful only to the petit criminal classes.

NYCMatt: Yes, do the math. There's no state or city in which that combined load gets to a marginal rate of 50%, unless you count weird phaseouts. New York City is the closest, at about 48% for the top combined marginal rate. There's certainly no scenario in which you get anywhere near a 50% effective rate.

Oh, actually I did the math wrong since city and state taxes are deductible. So the real max marginal rate is ~45.3%.

If you don't liek paying your 48% tax rate or whatever you pay, then you are free to leave NY. The fact that you have not left means you must like paying high taxes.
