Nice try Bloomberg, but if you want to destroy peoples' careers, you will have to try harder next time... Assembly Blocks Bill To End 'Last In, First Out' Teacher Layoff Rule Mayor Bloomberg's dreams of ending the "last in, first out" rule for laying off teachers appear to be crushed. Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver said his chamber would not consider a bill that would immediately end the teacher layoff rule, which requires that less experienced teachers are laid off first, before long-time educators (as opposed to on 'merit', which is what Bloomberg is fighting for). The bill made it through the Republican controlled state Senate, but stalled in the Assembly, which is majority Democrat. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/02/last-in-first-out_n_830177.html [less]
It should be ended and they should find a fair way to decide layoffs. There are plenty of teachers coasting to get the years in for the full pension. and there are plenty of new teachers that do not belong teaching in the classroom. There are plenty in the middle of their careers that just are not good teachers.
The policy should be ended and procedures put in place to make sure that teachers are not laid off because their income is to high and it saves the budget or any retalatory firings. Other then that why should the school system operate any different then any other job out there where you could be fired with or without cause, with no bearing on how many years you have put into the company.
I heard two older teachers chatting on the subway yesterday and I was horrified to hear how they were talking regarding test scores, students, etc. Basically made it sound as if they have written off all the kids as never being able to learn and they did not want to lose their protection of seniority and not being able to be laid off.
It's not a simple story at all. But Socialist is determined to reduce it to FIFO to the death.
NYC public schools are increasingly bifurcated - thin veneer of "good" schools with middle-class, college-educated parent body and I can't think of a politic way to describe the remainder.
Bloomberg's motivation to end last in first out is to dump higher paid teachers. He could not care less about bad teachers. ANd why are teachers being singled out? Why is nobody calling for dumping LIFO for cops, fire fighters, sanitation, etc.?
do you have any idea what a good job you are doing of convincing everyone of everything that you hate? if you weren't so dumb, i would assume that you are in the pay of the koch brothers. do yourself and your cause a favor---shut up.
columbiacounty, of course you are the solution to Socialist. Your suggestion is that we find a politician to stand up and lead us in a lengthy dialogue. Idiot.

>so...here's how we get started.
>a politician stands up and says: there are no easy answers anymore. for a viable future, we need to have shared sacrifice. rather than try to figure out how and which programs to cut, lets start with a lengthy dialogue aimed at creating a process that is fair.
>i naively thought that obama was that guy; i think he may have thought he was as well.
Socialist:
Just one more reason to curb the power of public service unions to procure special benefits
legislation from the whores they buy each election season.
So then you support publicly financed electins? In a system of publicly financed, elections, there would be no union or corporate money.
