Buy the apt I rent in a condo conversion?

I live in a nice 2 bedroom in Nolita, end of XIXth century building. The 8 owners (3 of them currently live in the building) are launching a non-eviction condo conversion, and are offering the units to existing tenants at a discounted price. I like the apt, I think the advertised discounted price looks fairly cheap and the monthly charges/maintenance fees not awfully high. BUT, I would be a first time buyer, don't know much about the real estate market and read some scary stuff about conversions. Would you guys have any advise on steps to follow, what to do and check, websites to look into, before considering this more seriously and look into hiring professionals to help? Thanks a lot!
