Pre War Buildings - loud heating pipes

I just moved in to a pre war apartment and discovered that my dog is terrified of the sound that the heater makes when the heat is turned on. I tried trying to acclimate him by closing the bedroom door, but he didn't do very well. Does anybody have an idea of how to deal with this?
