Discussion about
The plant, Con Ed said, would rise on the East River waterfront in Long Island City, Queens, less than two miles from Times Square. In April, the utility’s chairman, Harland C. Forbes, told a Congressional committee that “one or two people have raised some question about the genetic effects of radiation and so forth.” Such concerns were “rather silly,” Mr. Forbes said. The plant’s neighbors... [more]

That does seem crazy now. But I think it would be a great idea to bury 30 or so Toshiba 4S reactors under Governor's Island . . .

A meltdown would not just impact propert values in LIC...I am not sure if people grasp that...the radius in Japan is like 50 miles.

Well in 1962 (when this proposal was discussed and ultimately rejected), nobody knew from Fukushima or Chernobyl (or even Three Mile Island, for that matter).

"A meltdown would not just impact propert values in LIC...I am not sure if people grasp that...the radius in Japan is like 50 miles."

What happened in Japan is a perfect storm. No one expected both a 9.0 earthquake AND killer tsunami. And many redundant systems at the Fukushima plant were safely contained in a sealed chamber in the basement ... which no one forsaw would ever be flooded.

But guess what? NONE of the world's nuclear reactors could withstand a War of the Worlds invasion of alien ships with laser blasters. I'm sure when THAT happens everyone will be bitching about how the engineers should have foreseen THAT too.

Really? An entire nation living on one giant fault and this wasn't to be expected? By all accounts, both scientific and fortune tellers predict all of Japan into the sea within at the most a couple hundred years.

NYCMatt - That part of Japan is used to significant earthquakes on a regular basis AND (to use your empasis) tsunamis, because, strangely, earthquakes and tsunamis go hand in hand.

New reactors should be on permanent hold until cold fussion is a true reality

"New reactors should be on permanent hold until cold fussion is a true reality"

So I assume you'll be the first to give up your electricity?

Perhaps I should have been more clear.

Err no, I much prefer to pump my unfair share of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and further the development of batteries/ battery life for solar power as the the true hurdle is storage of energy.

Further any couples having more than 2 kids should be taxed.

'Long Island City isn't already the #1 terrorist target?'

As a terrorist you have to ask yourself a question. What bad thing could I do to LIC that someone would actually notice? Poison the land? Too late. Poison the water? Too late. Make it harder to commute to Manhattan? Too late. The plan would be to buy up all the available property in LIC and move their families there...that would work. Burkas, face scarves and Hallal food carts everywhere...run for the hills!

I meant that Long Island City is the targeted "after picture" -- the destruction that terrorists have in mind when they target a place like the City of London, or Manhattan, or Minsk.

The discussion needs to be whether a nuclear power plant would be a substantial downgrade to Long Island City in comparison to what it is.

After all, birth defects and deaths from cancer are secondary to property values, right?

"truly inspiring of poetry" - yes, by Blake:

He. Where thou dwellest, in what condo,
Tell me Poor one, tell me Fool;
where thou thy life's savings dost waste,
O thou pride of every bank!
She. Yonder stands a glassy box,
There I live and mourn for booms;
Morning drinks my Starbuck's chai,
And evening bears my drunken sobs.

i was very affected by the effects of this poem
i am typically well-affected to Blake, for whom i have affection
my affection for this poem, combined with that i feel for LIC (and licDope) may effect a desire in me to write one of my own

a weak effort--apologies---who's next?

He. Where thou dwellest, in what condo,
Tell me Poor one, tell me Fool;
where thou thy life's savings dost waste,
O thou pride of every bank!
She. Yonder stands a glassy box,
There I live and mourn for booms;
Morning drinks my Starbuck's chai,
And evening bears my drunken sobs.

He. O thou summer's misery,
I have endured toxins mourn'd for thee;
Each fuming day I mourn along Newtown,
And glowing night hath heard railroad loud.

Definitely -- as long as he doesn't have to sing it in Long Island City ... heavy metals are bad for the vocal chords.

What are "evening bears", and how can they survive the intense concentration of radon emitting from the ground in Long Island City???

"bears" is herein used as a verb, in keeping with the model's structure
I'm surprised someone hasn't run with the he/she mating call theme - just imagine .... in the area once considered for a nuclear power plant....

lowery, don't be surprise. Few here live on Long Island City and fewer really give a damn about LIC. Not that most of us pick out LIC for not giving a damn, we equally don't give a damn about many other places we don't live, for instance for me, Bay Ridge, Salt Lake City, California. Only one obsessed poster is obsessed with one guy who has a place in Long Island city. Occasionally he gets support from another poster who named himself after his ass.

remember Wpervert, we don't want you around our families with your sick mind, discussions of watching Barney videos and condoms in the river and now hermaphrodites. Stay indoor Wbuttocks. You are dangerous to society, and not welcome around decent people and our families.
