Any comments/thoughts re: The Octagon on RI? Or life in general on RI?
A friend of mine lived there. He likened it to a sentence at Rikers. Couldn't wait to rejoin society.
Should be future home (or Randalls isl) to the UN.
Enough with chaos and inefficiency of traffic and resources this useless international body causes to NYC quality of life.
sorry meant to write;
with the chaos,the traffic, and the ineffiency of resources
I had a friend who lived in the Octagon for three years before moving to the East 30s in midtown. He didn't love the experience. He felt isolated and the transportation was inconvenient for his commute to work.
if you work on F line and live near the F on RI, its ok. OR mid town eat right near 59th/2nd. Otherwise....nightmare.

I think it's probably right for some people -- a strangely small-town vibe (though also one that can be a little...well, odd). It's a PITA commute for most people, though -- and it can feel deserted after 6pm.
You should really go over a couple of nights in a week to have dinner, go shopping, buy some groceries, etc. You'll either love it and feel like you fit right in, or find it to be an utter pain in the butt (particularly when you get to that "shopping" thing). It's a real love it or hate it type of thing -- and I don't think there's any way to tell which you'd be without trying it.
I think that while Roosevelt Island may be an alternative to New Jersey, it's not an alternative to New York.
It has a surreal vibe.
