Aug. too soon to look for Oct. high-rise rental?

I am moving back to NY in the Fall and will be looking for an Oct. 1 lease. I am not planning to use a broker since I will mostly be looking at the luxury-doorman-type buildings near Columbus Circle and along 7th Ave in Chelsea (easy enough to deal with management directly). Most buildings will release their future inventory 30 days in advance or 60 days in advance. In my experience, most are 30. Try reaching out to the leasing offices in advance and getting someone's e-mail address so you can check-in with them (and don't rely on their promise to keep you updated!).
