HVAC units and cigarette smoke

I'm moving into an apartment whose previous owner was a smoker. In addition to priming and painting all walls and closets and tearing out carpet and drapes to remove the smoke smell, I'm wondering if I need to clean or replace the HVAC units, which might have absorbed some cigarette smoke. Is cleaning the interior of the unit and replacing filters enough, or do I need to replace the entire units completely (two units, one in living room, one in bedroom)? And if replacement is necessary, around how much would that cost? Thanks.
