Discussion about
why do renters have filet minon expectations with sloppy joe budgets?
alanhart will be with your shortly.
why are brokers so, broke....
Because even the current rental market in New York City is absofuckinglutely out of touch with what people actually EARN.
Even "just" $3,000/month for a nice one-bedroom in a doorman building is a LOT of money; you need a household income of $135K to afford that apartment, and the median household income for MANHATTAN (not even the five boroughs) is under $70K. In fact, at $135K, you're already in the top 10% of ALL earners in Manhattan.
So yeah, if I'm paying THOUSANDS of dollars a month for a couple of rooms, they'd better be a fucking AWESOME couple of rooms.
Sorgel,
that's New York!
Demand Ritz Carlton service at Howard Johnson prices.
You know what they get?
Fried clams
Because today's renters are far removed from the generation of immigrants and the depression. They were raised in an era of plenty , and have a sense of entitlement and don't understand cold realities. Many will spend half their income and forgo savings just to pretend instead of living a little further away getting something more and saving for the future. Some have parents who help out.
For once I agree with Matt!
I'm in the top 1/2 of 1% of earners in the country, & I find Manhattan to be too expensive. I'm sure I'm not alone. Over a half a million dollars for a 350-square foot studio is just ridiculous.
>Over a half a million dollars for a 350-square foot studio is just ridiculous.
absolutely true.
"I'm in the top 1/2 of 1% of earners in the country, & I find Manhattan to be too expensive."
Seriously.
As I get older, I'm questioning more and more what VALUE I'm getting for remaining in NYC.
More and more I'm fantasizing about living in places like this (which is literally down the street from where I grew up):

That's no Bucks county.
It's about 6 hours west of Bucks County.
Uhm, Ft. Lauderdale here I come! I found a gorgeous $1.3 million dollar house on the market for $600k. Still pricey, but it's gorgeous, no income tax, no corporate tax, unemployment insurance almost nothing, NO MTA TAX!
The rent is too damned high.
Oh, almost sounded perfect until you said no taxes. Bummer
the rent is high because property taxs very high to pay for entitlement programs welfare, blood suckers..
That's a huge part of it, MR17.
Manhattan's too expensive? Quick. Call stevejhx and his friends a whaaaaaaaaaaaaambulance. Fabulous is expensive, and Manhattan is fabulous.
"Fabulous is expensive, and Manhattan is fabulous."
Not as fabulous as it used to be.
And there's expensive ... and just plain overpriced.
Manhattan crossed that line about 10 years ago.
I'm not sure that fabulous will keep steve here, but he does quite often advocate higher taxes, and he already said the Florida is wanting on that score.
"Fabulous" isn't even keeping the gay guys here anymore ... mostly because the fabulous gay guys who work their asses off to reach fabulousity are sick and tired of paying higher taxes to support people who refuse to get OFF their asses.
"the rent is high because property taxs very high"
Uhm, no. Property taxes are paid based on the rent roll. Ergo rents determine the tax, and not the other way around.
"Fabulous is expensive...."
Sometimes.
"and Manhattan is fabulous."
Sometimes.
A 300-square foot studio, however, is NEVER fabulous.
Am I the only one here who find NYCMatt's last post on "asses" particularly funny?
@SORGEL; Because it has always been thus . . .
