Discussion about
I found this story pretty shocking. Gangs running riot in Dunkin Donuts at 7th Ave., turning the place upside down, more gangs holding up a pizza parlor on Bedford. A woman getting mugged in the early evening at the Christopher Street 1 train subway station. Cocaine sold openly on the sideway a few doors down from the Lucille Lortel theater, and muggings, hookers and assaults galore. How could... [more]

Thank God we're getting some of the Old New York back.

If we're lucky we'll even be able to take back Bleecker Street!

Sunday, I think that Matt sympathizes with the criminals. After all, to complete the crime, often they have to stay up late, which impacts their body clock, which we all know if that criminal were a union member would entitle that criminal to 3.5x overtimepay (in addition to the other penalties).

e76th: Held up at gunpoint on Jane st. Even 2 years ago the west Village was the place most likely to get mugged. Sorry to hear about your experience with that.(Usually kids with knives.)
Perry Street, West4th at West 10th (the corner that only locals can find).Seventh Ave.South., etc.
It does seem like Christopher Street is getting over-run with crime.

Many of the celebs living there are getting extra security. A few are getting armed security to stand guard outside their homes. You can spot them, standing/sitting on the stoops.

How do I apply for a handgun license?

Applicants must personally appear and submit a signed and notarized application to the License Division when applying. Fees may be paid by credit card or with two money orders. The application fee is $340.00. The fingerprint fee is $94.25. If you are paying with money orders, the money orders should be made payable to the “New York City Police Department.”

Funny, when I said I saw more personally frightening crime when living in the west village than on 157th st I was accused of being delusional. Yes, there is crime where I am now but I have to say, I'd rather watch a drug sale go down (peacefully) than be mugged or accosted. That said, the west village was fun as hell to live in. But I bristle when people imply living uptown is "dangerous."

Truth: Really? It's that bad? I used to live on Perry, then moved to Charles, so I find this shocking. I never felt unsafe there.

dwell: It appears to be bad enough that they are employing extra security. That's a good thing for the surrounding homes and the block.

Two years ago: Nights: weekdays and weekends. Mostly young kids with knives. Happened to a few people I know. Read about the others in the news. Usually one kid, maybe two. The roving gangs thing is the new threat down there.

Pistol permits: Carry, premises and target; in decending order of how difficult to get permit.
You can get carry if you're a celeb/public figure-type. (Or work and travel with.)
Premises is for it's O.K. to use it to defend yourself in your home, but you can't carry it on your person in the street. Not even outside your front door.
Target is keeping it in a locked case both in your home and on the way to the pistol range; where you have to go take target practice on a regular basis.

kylewest: I know.
It's the roving gang thing that's scary to residents.
If one of the store-owners gets robbed in their store: instant pistol premises permit (if they don't have a police record, and after they pass a very long interview at Police Plaza with a tough NYPD interviewer.
I was interviewed for 15 minutes, but it can last up to an hour for others.)

"wonder if the PATH has something to do with it."

The crime rates are similarly high in meatpacking and northern Soho. And there are MTA subway stops and NYC HUD housing projects nearby. Its funny that people assume its the PATH somehow, when there are plenty of other culprits, potentially. Why not the 1 train or AC from upper Manhattan or the Bronx? Or the projects on 24th etc? Or people from BK on the JMZ or L? Or poor people living right there in the village?

The PATH goes near ultra-low crime BPC too. That is THE safest part of the entire five borough area.

As far as stats go: Many mugging victims who get mugged for cash only (and they are many, kylewest)
don't bother to report the crime to the NYPD. No stats on that.

It takes hours and days, looking at mug-shots, even just waiting at a police precinct can take an hour or more to file a complaint and then wait more time to speak to an anti-crime detective.
Tourists don't want to deal with that. They are here for a limited amount of time and must return home. They won't be back in N.Y.C. for line-ups and even if a suspect is caught; trial.

Many muggers just want the cash. Not the credit cards or the watches, and all that. It's much easier for them.

Here is what I do not get, again. BPC has the lowest crime rate of any neighborhood in the five boroughs. Its right across from a PATH station. The area around WTC have crime rates higher than BPC, but far lower than the W Vil. Similarly, the crime rates near the 23rd street and 34th street PATH stations are lower than the W Vil. Finally, there are far more MTA stations than there are PATH stations in the area. Yet Matt says its "obvious" the PATH is why there is crime in the W Village.

Brilliant analysis jason. But how about this analysis: If we removed the PATH station from Christopher Street, would we have the same level of crime? I think we all know that it would be reduced. And I think we all know that those taking the PATH in to Christopher Street probably wouldn't be redirected to Battery Park City.

Isn't Christopher the first stop off the Path making it convenient for those coming from "the west". I seem to remember way back when there was a similar problem at the same Path stop. It's a good jump off and jump back on station. The direct paralell would be eighth avenue in the 40's where the hookers used to line up waiting for the guys driving out of the Lincoln Tunnel making a quick stop for whatever and going around the black and right back to through the tunnel. I think that underbelly of life has missed their calling in scouting demographically high traffic locations for services.

to reduce crime in wv requires the physical removal of wv from wv. very expensive neighborhood where many locals have more $ than they know what to do with, the "tourists" are out partying, they have money to spend and vices to quench and their guard is down. the bad guys are not stupid or they wouldn't last very long as bad guys now would they. not much more complicated than that.

wv mountain momma take me home country roads

If I paid my 35 cents to ride the PATH to mugging opportunities, I'd so totally get off in Hoboken to rob those polluted whitebread 22-year-olds rather than wait the extra 3 minutes to get to St. Xto4

And this, Alan, is why you simply don't have a head for business.

But I'm sure you still have a bod for sin.

I remember reading about a one-boy crime spree in the West Village around a couple of years ago.

It was a ten-year-old kid. One night a guy was walking with his girlfriend and when the little kid attempted to mug them, the guy thought he was kidding. He told the kid to piss off, or something like that.

I'm sure some of you can find a link to that somewhere.

That's really not a very nice thing for a guy to say to a kid.

...hmm rob able bodied closet cases (hii Grindr) in hobo or rich old ladies one stop away..
