Asbestos

I am renovating my apt and they gutted the bathroom. Its circa 1958. Behind where the medicine cabinet was there are 2 stuffed bags that say Gold Bond, Gymsum company on them. One of them is punctured with a piece of wood coming out of it and this stuff that looks like fluffy brillo spilling out of the top. Is it asbestos? If it is, how do I get it removed? How much does it cost for removal?

National Gypsum definitely made a bunch of construction materials in the 1950s which contained asbestos. It could also just be insulation.

If that's all of the information that you have, then you should either get it tested, or abated properly. In my experience, many contractors have a hard time identifying asbestos. A test is quite simple and quick. If you need a recommendation for a tester, let me know.
