Discussion about
I see you as an expert on all things NYC government. I have my doubts about a particular contractor and would like to check out his permits. Any advice on navigating the DOB information?
You mean, do a search by contractor name? I don't know of a way to do that other than google.
Try doing this "Contractor name" nyc.gov xls (enter all these together) in a google search box. That sometimes pulls up an Excel spreadsheet with jobs that the contractor has done. Works with architect.
Do the search with "Contractor firm LLC" and the name of the owner and xls and nyc.gov
Commoner,
You can go on the dept of buildings website and on the right hand side put in the address of the building and see all the permits listed
What makes you think the permits are not good?
Don't know exactly what Commoner means.
Do you want to find out what buildings he has pulled permits on?
Or do you know the bldgs but want to see the nature of the permit he has pulled?
Does commoner mean licenses rather than permits?
I think he means licenses.

nyc10023, thanks for answering so quickly.
The potential problem was this:
this contractor did a big job (total gut) and was supposed to do a total rewiring. Which he did not do but just did a superficial replacement of a few open wires. The owner was charged as if the total rewiring was done. The owner somehow overheard that the contractor didn't have a permit for the rewiring, and that was the beginning of all other permits-related issues.
My question was, is it possible to check the permits for a specific contractor within, say, 6 months period?
I think you are confusing checking to see what permits a contractor pulledor got approval for from DOB, or to see if the contractor is liscenced. Just go to DOB website with property address and you can see all the permits for a particular property.
