How big of a space do you need? If you're willing to do a small junior one bed or studio, there are a couple of places in Chelsea I may be able to recommend. They're brownstones whose owners rent out "guest" apartments for a few months at a time. Both are a bit dilapidated but quaint and fairly reasonable with options in the $2,000 - $3,000 range.
