i think many americans "hate" the what is officially labeled as socialism, but they tend to not only like but expect things from their government that are techincally socialism. and in conversation and when you do get them to that point, and then spring on them that what they are describing is actually socialism, they pause and say, well we pay enough in taxes, why shouldn't we have these things. seriously, try it. that's exactly how that exchange will play out.

Not sure I agree. This country traditionally has a strong libertarian bent. Socialist and Communist parties are not popular here the way they are in Europe. That said over the last several decades a strong entitlement culture has bled in. In other words, once a generation gets used to a gov't benefit they feel they deserve it.

sure, people don't like to think about how the government pays for stuff but they see their paychecks every 2 weeks and they know a great deal of people are helping themselves their hard earned money and they feel they can expect certain things in return. just don't call it Socialism! because they learned in school Socialism is bad.

ex communists hate socialism too.

"Political parties at the universities were more interested in boosting their memberships than for any particular ideology or objective I remember I was approached by the communist youth, only because I was Russian. I had never(Nor have I yet) met so many slimy people all under one roof. At least in communist countries political parties are illegal. Those parties were always on a race who would close down the university. I missed two exam periods and I didn’t have the luxury to lose any more. I was working at the same time to make ends meet. I took a decision that until now has proved the best one I have made. I want to pause and congratulate to all young Greeks who failed to enter the Greek AEI. It will only do you good. I decided to cut my losses and move and study abroad. I didn’t want to become a public employee and I really wanted to learn my science, instead of getting a worthless piece of paper.

Studying abroad let me enjoy responsibly my life. It was tougher but also worth it. Now I work for an MNC(Multi National Company) out from Russia and I am responsible for South East Europe. I still come to Greece since it is part of the markets I am responsible for, I also come for vacations. I want to feel sorry for Greeks but their failure is 100% theirs. At least we Russians we had communism forced upon us, Greeks have no valid excuse. Greeks are very insular and close minded people who they have a god given right over others just because their ancestors created the Parthenon"

it's clear that the goal of those who want to turn this country into europe is to raise the percentage of population that doesn't pay any taxes to 50%+. That is a point of no return as it would be irrational for them to vote for anything BUT socialism. The only defense is to take away their right to vote

If the gov't had an option where you could get back your contributions to Social Security and say get back principal plus interest at say the ten year constant maturity rate, opt out and then fully fund your own plan I would do so in a second.

Who does not pay taxes here or in Europe? Almost every EU nation has a VAT tax, and that hits EVERY consumer heavily, even if they pay no income taxes. Every employee in Europe pays payroll taxes of some sort.

In the US, similarly, every consumer pays sales and/or excise taxes, and every employee, even minimum wage ones, pay payroll taxes.

Federal Income taxes are only 40% of Federal Government revenues, and Federal taxes are less than 2/3 of taxes collected. So Federal Income taxes are only about 27% of all taxes Americans pay.

In Europe, the percentage is often lower. And I mean even in Sweden and Finland, where the VAT bites harder.

Facts are a dangerous thing. I doubt se10024 has ever read the first thing about European tax systems.

i doubt 10006 can find europe on the map. As to the argument that everyone pays taxes (non-consumption based, I'm actually quite for raising consumption taxes if payroll taxes were reduced) it is a joke

The reason 50% of the country does not pay any federal income tax is because of policies pushed through by Reagan and Milton Friedman. You see, Friedman is the father of the negative income tax (aka welfare). That was his main idea and together with Reagan, he got it implemented. So of course now, if Friedman were still alive, he would be labeled a crazy Socialist by the current Republican party.

Who are America's famous Socialists? Lyndon Larouche? Lenora Fulani? Good people ... good people.

Has anyone looked at the Socialist Party logo http://socialistparty-usa.org/ which says "Workers of the World Unite." Seems to mean workers first, country second... not very patriotic.

Considering Socialist (our Streeteasy poster) doesn't like foreigners, maybe Socialist isn't actually socialist.

boy oh boy, how much do you love election time!! i think bachmann is def vp. perry is obviously the biggest swingiest dick, and i just don't see him sharing a ticket with romney, whom i like. it will be a fight to the death between those 2 and bachmann takes vp. ron paul just keeps running to stay relevant, it's good for his real career. huntsman...that's just not happening, very populist and unpleasant. no good. herman cain i like, but there were bigger stars on that stage. gingrich, too, running to help his real career. you'll see, bachmann is vp and....i'll say ROMNEY. they held him back last time because no one was beating obama, he's running this time and winning. just like i said, by the way like a year ago, remember HUNTERSBURG?? what was the name of that thread? i said his religion was not an issue until it needed to be, and they held him back because of it. maybe my drunky hillrat sources know more than your grown up sources?? this little morsel here seems to suggest ron paul was the star last night. no way he actually gets the nomination, but if things get to the point where he has so much overt public support that the powers that be just cannot sideline him and have to put him on the ticket in some capacity........holy crap. would he actually attempt to accomplish all the things he says? he'd be deadlocked, no one would allow it. to have a real chance to make any of the changes he would see made, he would have to appropriate more power to the presidency, which his principles in theory should never allow him to do. this is an exciting time, people!! pay attention! this is the guy who actually intends to CHANGE things, not just put that word on a nifty poster, you should care about this!

"i doubt 10006 can find europe on the map"

Please do tell us then, which part of what I said was incorrect? That US Federal Income taxes equal only about 27% of all taxes paid in the US, or that in socialist Europe, the VAT, payroll and other taxes are together a far greater source of government revenue than income taxes?

Please detail for our benifit the nature of the Swedish, German, and UK tax systems, for example.

Also please, since you know so much more about Europe than me, discuss the genesis from Franco-led fascist Spain to the modern constitutional monarchy, keeping in mind the reign of Isabella the Second and the Socialist election victories in the late 1920s and early 1930s.

Also, please tell me about the various mergers and de-mergers of the Kingdoms of Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. Please make sure and discuss the changing statuses of Greenland and Iceland, the influence of Russia and Poland-Lithuania on the Baltic regions from the time of the 30-years war onward.

Finally, please tell us something about the expansion and dissolution, in various stages, of Byzantine Empire following the death of Theadora the Second (or was it the third?)

Literally, all of this off the top of my head. I can fucking run circles around you, asshole, when it comes to European politics, history, economics, and geography.

jason, you must be kidding with that post. The U.S. has a federalist system. We are discussing the federal government and federal taxes, not local taxes. This is especially more relevant because the federal government does not need to balance its budget.

Payroll taxes are supposed to be dedicated to specific services and programs. Those programs are not supposed to cost more than the dedicated taxes. The fact that they do mean the programs need reform. That in no way lessens the disgrace that almost half of the households in this country pay no federal income tax. These people have incentive to just keep wanting more spending out of the federal general budget since they don't have to pay for it.

Try to stay reasonable please.

do you mean besides this one?

"my wife works in finance. we have a nanny (not live in) because we can afford one.

how nice for you both! so is that the source of your anger? your inability to support your family as a real man would, allowing your child to be raised by the mother who would teach him by example everything from speech to personal conduct instead of a barely literate, though no doubt loving, 3rd world immigrant whom you pay money to change his diapers and feed him and just keep him physically unharmed? i agree, that must indeed be rough and challenging to the manhood.

"we didnt move to the suburbs because we camt hack it."

i believe this is also because you are in the business of renting real estate in manhattan. which probably means you have to be at any given location at the whim of a client, right? sure, in your situation staying in manhattan is certainly the smart call.

"...Among working households, 82 percent pay more payroll tax than income tax. They also pay federal excise taxes on gasoline, beer, wine, liquor, tires, and cigarettes. And state and local taxes are notoriously regressive. ..."

So my confusion is twofold:

1 - columbiacounty says that Jim's wife gives $50 blowjobs. But what about columbiacounty's friend w67thstreet. On streeteasy, w67thstreet said - and I'll quote exactly - "Of the thousands of people who touched my wife"...

2 - Jim's wife is in finance. I've seen Jim several times express his distaste for bankers.

wait, what? do you not know of this really neat new thing called smartphones? all your pissy vulgar hostile posts, you write those from your house, surrounded by your family? huh

and i've actually always openly maintained my intention of going back to work after my kids are comfortably in school. so, no, my fancy edumacation was not a waste of perfectly good money someone else earned.

my husband's office is actually in new jersey. he is not someone whom you might (and have in the past) describe as a "banker piece of sh*t". how curious, then, learning a few minutes ago that mrs. hones is actually a "banker piece of shit". i'm like an elephant, jim. or is it a llama? which one never forgets? that's me, if you've said it, i remember it.

and how even more tremendously insightful, jim, that you go on to describe being a sex toy for your spouse as something bad.

jim, i'll be HONESt with you (get it??) what you are trying to accomplish here is improbable. i'm not saying it's impossible, but better, smarter, and more attractive people than you have tried and failed. i urge you give up on this silly aspiration of yours, before i say anything REALLY mean. go in peace, jim.

This meet up should be interesting.
If possible, and you two don't mind, could you let me know where it will be? I'd like to watch Jim on his bicycle trying to run over columbiacounty on his rollator and then columbiacounty's bodyguard driving the second avenue bus to run over Jim.

You won't know it's me. I'll be dressed as William Shatner in that Priceline commercial with Naomi Price.

so lucille you are out of the home playing with your iphone completely neglecting your family all day every day? is that what you are saying?

you sound lime you have a great fan club? what is this inference to those "better, smarter, more.attractive people tham you have tried"

i suppose it is easy to remember stuff, and be clever when you neglect your kids and spouse and just play with a phone all day
