replacing shower door handle

I'm wondering whether it's possible to replace the metal handle on a glass shower door. Can the current handle be removed without breaking the glass? If so, does the new handle have to attach at the exact same points where the old handle attached -- i.e. will the contact points of the old handle leave marks that can't be cleaned off? Thanks.
