Hey gang, for the electrical mavens; I have 5 spots on a wall on 1 light switch. I recently decided to splurge on the new LED small fortune bulbs and they are pretty satisfactory. I went with 50 watt (11 real watt) bulbs replacing 75 watt halogens. I tested with 2 first and it worked fine. When I have all 5 in they wouldnt turn on. When I put back an original bulb in the first spot, all 5 light up. Any ideas on what's going on and what to correct? (They are dimmable, have a maestro switch)
I’m in the process of designing the lighting for our apt and also have some expertise in a related field.
The problem is not the dimmer but probably the transformer in the existing housing. Retro fit MR16LED are not quite there yet. Also, the lamp is small and heat dissipation is an issue without making the lamp to big and it not fitting in where standard MR16 does.
You’re running 5 lamps on one circuit and that may be your problem.
A new fixture with dedicated LEDs will perform and you can get smaller fixtures with the 50W equal as the manufacturers have ways of dissipating heat through the design of fixture. These fixtures are more expensive than MR16 fixtures.
Some of the better manufactures are Lucifer (the best), RSA, Element, Lutron, and others. You can replace the entire fixture (trim & housing) with one of the dedicated kind. Cost will be $3-600 each.

LED lighting is now equal or better than fluorescent and incandescent, but you still have to pay some premium. Prices will come down further and the performance will continue to improve.
If you are looking for linear LEDs to replace a fluorescent design go to Dreamcape.

All of these are state of the art and really high performance and best designs.
Thank you IEB. I would guess it would have to be the transformer in the housing too.
I just find it strange that it's reacting as if it were a linear christmas tree light circuit.
But I dont understand the 5 lamps on one curcuit a problem. They work fine with 75 watt halogens.
I reduced the wattage.
