It's fine for short distances. But it's a local train. All the time.

the major issue is that they are repairing major portions of the F line is Brooklyn and it is often shut down on the weekend. You have shuttle buses but they are not ideal. Major portions are above ground so inclement weather regularly shuts it down. If you have a car it's a great train, ha.

F from Park Slope 7th Ave Stop takes much, much longer than 2/3 or B/Q. F gets really crowded by Bergen in Cobble Hill - yesterday I had to let two F's pass by before I could get on a train. At Jay Street (downtown) it clears out with A/C connection. As stated above - lots of stops but you can transfer to B/D at Broadway/Lafayette for express to 34th - 42nd - Rock Center
Also, ALL lines have a lot of weekend work and Brooklyn gets hammered, so be prepared for tricky weekend travel especially if you are coming from Manhattan where you don't really feel the impact so much. Of course, Brooklyn is lots of fun and much nicer than it was 'back then' so you may find you do not want to go back to Manhattan so often.

i lived on the F line for 15 yrs. after 2 yrs on B/Q line, you really start to appreciate the reliability of the train. it's definitely not the fastest of the bunch, but you will not be late to work by 2 hours a few times a month because of some stupidity. i had more breakdowns/long delays/stuck between stations (15+) in 2 yrs on B/Q lines then on the F in the period of 15 yrs.
