Finding out the real deal about a building/unit

I've been doing my own research via SE and have narrowed down the search to a couple of properties. I've attended open houses on my own without a broker. Before putting an offer, is there any way to find out candidly the positives/negatives of a certain unit or building (ie. any huge issues about the building or unit that I should be aware of)? I'm skeptical that if I involve a broker at this point that I won't receive honest/candid feedback.
