Garage Tipping

$5 per trip.

Maybe I am in the minority here, however I pay my monthly fee, the attendant gets his salary, I give him a $100 holiday tip at year end and call it a day. I also am a weekend only driver. I do not think this is any different then front desk staff. I do not tip every time they open the door, hand me a package, etc. I do not understand how all of this became expected.

I do tip $2-5 in/out when i use other garages that is not my monthly.

My garage has three guys working. Gave them $100 (they share tips at holidays) at end of year. Other than that, I don't tip them. I only drive on the weekends. Call me cheap or rude or whatever you choose, but I see no reason to tip them (and save me the story that "it is part of their salary). I don't want to start another thread on tipping - I'm just saying what I do.

We tip $2 if we have it just for one way, in or out. And I don't give an annual bonus since the staff turns over so frequently.

I give $2 in and out, each time I use my car. Guys are all very nice and a couple (mainly the manager) knows me by name and goes out of his way to be nice. I only tipped him at the end of the year as I tip all the guys throughout the year.

I dole out a month's rent in tips at holiday time and do not tip at all during the year. Maybe I go a tad over at holidays--don't recall. Guys seem very happy. Seems silly to walk around with singles and have to deal with that upon arrival and departure each time. Each attendant about $60. Asst manager $80. Manager $100.

You realize that's like leaving a penny as a tip for a waitress, right? Tipping someone only a buck is an insult, since you can't buy anything of real value for a dollar (except maybe a pack of gum -- oh wait, the good stuff is $1.25 these days).

NYCMart - Not that i think a buck is a good enough tip but there is value in it and nobody is saying that the attendant can't group that buck together with other bucks and buy something for more than $1.

Let's see. If he pulls out 10 cars an hour each car gives him 2 bucks, that's $20/ hr.

Matt - When you go to a bar and get an $8 beer - how much do you tip? I think $1 is sufficient for 15 seconds of work.

downtown: It is.
2 bucks is for putting a lime on the rim of a Corona.
2-3 bucks is the norm for mixed drinks.

Matt - Where did you get $1/hour? Seems that you figure the guy should make all of his income from one tip. Anyway, Brooks and Downtown have it right. I'm afraid I can't see Matt's perspective no matter how much I squint.

Matt is confused. He was thinking about the fair tip when he goes to retrieve his horse drawn buggy. The attendants have to shovel the horse shit too.

I guess it is all purely subjective, if you use the car every weekend Saturday and Sunday, you are talking about $400 for the year, you probably don't use it that much, I am sure the attendant appreciates it and at least you know it is going to them directly, I am always amused at folks who give $$ to charities but then are cheap with their doormen and garage attendants, people you actually interact with as opposed to non-profits with multi-million dollar accounts that aggressively ask for $$ if you ever give them a dime, not saying don't be charitable, but I think it should start with the people who help you...

I used to tip $5 each time I used the car - mostly weekends, in the naive hope that it would prevent the attendants from damaging my car. And then $50 a person at Christmas.

Nothing worked - the car always looked like crap. Parking is the most frustrating aspect of living in Manhattan. Now I park in my building basement - unattended, nobody to tip, big giant space, no damage, everything monitored by doorman in case of a problem... a slice of vehicular heaven.

Yes, new dings, scratches, dirt on the inside, scrapes on the wheels. My car was even used to jump start another car one time.

What kind of garage was this? How much were you paying / month?

When I become Mayor, I'm changing the law. Fuck it. People need garages more than they need those silly quasi-basement level living spaces, and they're sick and tired of handing their keys over to illegal aliens at high-priced parking garages who ding and scrape up their cars (if they're not out and out taking joyrides or running illegal car rentals with them).
