I am a current tenant who is now looking to leave as soon as our lease is up in April. The apartment is really beautiful. Pre-war style with high ceilings and a lovely back yard space. All things that made us sign a 2 year lease.
We should've known it was sketchy upon our first viewing. The landlord talked insessantly about horrible past experiences with tenants & about the person upstairs being a weirdo. Then, she actually forged my initials on her lease copy so she could state that we owed her money before our actual signed agreement. (always keep your lease handy!) from month 1 there were problems. A stair broke under my husband. He could have really hurt himself. Landlord response: "you shouldn't be carrying such heavy things down the stairs". It took 4 months for landlord to finally get an exterminator. (I had caught 20 mice by then) LL refused to believe there was an infestation. On top of that, she came into the apartment & put poison pellets in all of our cabinets. (entering the apt & doing this without our consent. We have a small dog) well, being that there was a mouse problem, the mice carry pellets and leave them all over the place. I had to take my dog to the vet & it was a really scary situation. She could've killed our dog. LL lives in bldg part time. Not a month goes by without some sort of harassment. We dread having to call her when there are problems or questions. Apartment is freezing in the winter. We actually had to resort to calling 311 because when we called her asking about the heat she told my husband to go f himself. I could go on and on. This is just a warning I am throwing out to the world. I have lived in ny for many years. I hope to never have a problem LL like this again.
