Discussion about
Has anyone heard that mastic used to apply flooring may have asbestos? This is an 1980s building. Wasn't it outlawed by then?

Yes, the mastic used to apply flooring can contain asbestos. I was required to have an asbestos inspector due to cutting through exterior walls in a prewar co-op during a gut renovation, and the inspector (unasked, btw) determined that the mastic used to apply the old (but not original) kitchen tiles had asbestos. It had to be removed by an abatement company. Luckily as I had to have the abatement company anyway for the exterior cuts it wasn't a big upcharge. Once it has been found, it is your responsibility to remove it properly if you are doing work that disturbs it.
