Chimney Sweep?

Can anyone recommend a service to come and clean out a chimney? We're moving to a new apartment and I'd like to make sure that we have a clear passage before attempting to light anything in the fireplace. Am I being overly cautious? The previous owners just burnt Duraflame logs...

No, you're not being overly conservative.

Here are a couple - Fireside Construction Brooklyn 212-244-6639 (I used them)
Dave Watts - 212 683 0028 (also used him, but heard he may have retired)

Call them in the spring, they are not as busy.

AA also comes recommended on Brownstoner.com - that's a good source to ask (on forums).

Empire Chimney is based in LI but works in NYC. We used them and they were excellent and not too expensive. It's good to get references for Chimney companies because there's a lot of sleazy crooks out there. If one seems too expensive (or even threatening -- we had that once) get a second estimate.
