Discussion about
We are installing glass tile in our bathroom, walls and floors and are thinking of using Mastic instead of thinset or Laticrete. Does anyone have any experience using this product or any suggestions for something different? This install is in a high vibration area.
Everything you need to know about tile: http://www.johnbridge.com/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=1
Some quick things
1.Do not use Mastic ( why would you)
2. Use Laticrete platinum 254 this set or prolite by custom
3. Use Laticrete hydroban. It is an anti fracture membrane under tiles
4. I would only tile the floor using glass mosaics. Bigger glass tiles are not a good idea
Thank you.
What you may already know, but Primer didn't say:
Installation of glass tile is perhaps the most difficult of all tiles to install well. The slightest imperfection shows in every aspect of the job: alignment of tiles, grouting, adhesive, etc. If it isn't done right, it looks like crap. Seriously. You're eye will pick up every little thing. I'm not sure why it is with glass, but that's what happens.
For flooring, if you use glass, in my experience, you have to accept it is going to get scratched. A little bit of pavement from the roadwork outside your apartment sticks in the sole of someone's shoe who then uses the rest room when they arrive at your home. Things like that. I think in a mosaic, an occasional glass tile mixed in for a floor design can be great, but too much and you may be disappointed in what happens over time.
Finally, glass tile is sort of trendy. It is unlikely to always remain in style. Don't get me wrong--I've used it. But to reduce the likelihood that it will look dated in the near future, I recommend you consider avoiding a highly taste-specific color palate.
There's my unsolicited two cents. Good luck with the project.
I always look forward to your two cents, thanks.
