Avoiding unnecessary broker fee

My friends have an apartment that I'm interested in moving into when they move out May 1. They spoke to their landlord, and he said that unfortunately I still have to go through a broker because he is under contract to rent out the apartment through a broker. I find it ridiculous to have to pay a broker fee for an apartment that I "found" myself. Is there any way to get around this?? Thanks!
