Discussion about
Is there such a thing as a sincere contractor who is accountable, honest and a good communicator? My experience has been quite negative. Yes, I am venting.

esteban,

I think it is like any other business, you have the good and the bad. I don't think there is any business that doesn't have their share of bad. It is very easy to remember horrific stories of renovations, I hear them all the time. I do not come across to many people that speak of the renovation success stories because it isn't much of a story. There are some that are very good

My experience is that a contractor cannot be good on both quality (attention to detail) and price. And no contractor will feel your pain as much as you do. Go with word-of-mouth referrals.

I've renovated several apartments. Some were complete gut-renovations of sponsor units while others were cosmetic face-lifts, so to speak. The KEY in all of this is communication, communication, communication. Get the terms in writing, establish a dialogue/rapport with the contractor and don't hesitate to call his cell phone at any time (within reason) to ask for updates, hurry things along, etc. I've had good experiences with that methodology. If you're working within a coop, ask your fellow shareholders for recommendations as that contractor might already be in good graces with the board.

Not our experience at all. Our guy is reasonable but also extremely attentive. Highly, highly recommend our contractor and would be glad to refer.

Absolutely there are, I had a phenominal contractor. Then when a prestigous fifth avenue building rang me for references on him, I had such mixed feelings of dread (how would I find another contractor like him?) and real happiness, that he was such a great guy in every way that he deserved to get what he wanted. .....He got the job.

Bramster I would love to get the name of your contractor to put in my file as I have followed your posts.

Plus I know when I do another job I would definitely get Primer05 to quote, I can tell from his posts that he would be a good guy.
