Is this possible/common? I got a $25 bill on my bill today for fire alarm / co. It's not like I damaged it and they had to replace it. It seems they just replaced them and charged all the tenants. They never gave me the option to buy my own or refuse to have a new one installed. This isn't some 4 unit building, this is a Pan Am building with 500 units where they are apparently trying to squeeze another drop of profit out of the tenants.
sorry, not "fire alarm", but a "smoke detector".
They get a deal to buy in bulk.
It's the law that they all be in working condition and maybe they wanted new detectors because there is a reco that they be replaced every (how many?) years. I can't remember where I read that or maybe saw it on the news.
At least it's a smoke detector. Something useful.

check with NYC.gov, DHCR (if rental) to see if this is allowed. Dept of Housing & Community Renewal is where you go.
I understand it should be the law, and obviously the rooms should have smoke detectors, but since they own the building, wouldn't the law apply to them, not me?
Why on earth am I supposed to pay for it?
And yes, it's "only $25" which is even less meaningful to the management company that does over a million a month in rentals from my building alone.
What about if you break your toilet seat? Who should pay for that?

Reimburse the building owner $25.00 for each carbon monoxide alarm that is newly installed or installed as a result of the occupant's failure to maintain the carbon monoxide alarm or where the carbon monoxide alarm has been lost or damaged by the occupant.
Keep and maintain the carbon monoxide alarm in good repair.
Is a combination smoke/carbon monoxide detector permitted?
Yes
If a building owner installs a combination smoke/carbon monoxide detector, can the owner get a $35 reimbursement from the tenant ($10 for smoke detector plus $25 for carbon monoxide detector?)
Owners who install a combined smoke and carbon monoxide alarm are entitled to be reimbursed a maximum of $35.00 only when the smoke alarm needs to be replaced i.e. it is missing or inoperable. If the smoke alarm is operable and the building owner still wants to replace it with a combined alarm, he or she can only be reimbursed $25.00.
Unfortunately the CO detectors expire, so they do need to be replaced.
... BUT, this might be an issue that Occupy Wall Street could take up for you.
