Responsible party in damage from roof leak

The co-op's responsible for fixing the plaster. You pay for any repainting.

imo, the coop is responsible for the repainting too. It's part of the cost of fixing the damage that the faulty roof caused.

That'd be good for the particular owner, though not for the other shareholders.

The Proprietary Lease typically says "...nor shall the Lessor be obligated to repaint or replace wallpaper or other decorations in the apartment or to refinish floors...."

Aside from the expense, if the co-op pays to restore your place to its pre-leak condition, then it either has to do the same for everybody or risk getting sued for treating some shareholders better than others.

You might be able to get the extra costs covered by your own or the upstairs neighbor's insurance, though.
