Dyslexic mixup, perhaps - with a touch of ADD thrown in for good measure?

What I mean is - are you sure the full sentence of whatever it was you were reading, possibly read:

"Poor man - there was no elevator, & he had to walk up."?

The safety elevator wasn't invented until what, the 1850s? Do you think there were no doormen before then? Doorman no elevator.

Waiters have always been dumb, though.
