Discussion about
The building is currently subject to an infestation of American cockroaches (adults size ~2 inches). The problem has been on going for months now at different places in the building (8th, 9th or 4th floor) and has accelerated recently (November 2012)...

American cockroaches are called "waterbugs".
Put a metal net drainer in your bathtub and kitchen sink drains.

Those things can fly!
Once, one must have flown up to my soap-caddy hanging from the shower.
When I turned on the light, I startled it and it fell to the bathtub with an audible thud sound as it hit.
They can't crawl up the sides of the tub very well, they slide right down again.
That's when you take a pot of water and wash them down the drain.
So get a metal drainer in there. After I did that they never returned.

"Waterbugs", as they're known in New York.

Combact products are the only consumer ones that work against roaches and huntersburg. Try the two products described herein (specifically the *large* size bait trap), and follow the other advice too.

alan, I just googled waterbugs and cockroaches, as I always appreciate the information you provide.

Then, being impulsive, I googled "alanhart" and wow, it's worse than when you google "caonima". Who knew?

Here were the top listings:

What is the bldg. management doing about this infestation, JMPSE?

On a side note, a friend recently returned to his apt. in FiDi after Sandy, and he says the (relatively) new conversion where he lives is now massively infested. I suppose flooding displaced the vermin, too...

@nyc212:
The building management had the exterminator come about 10 days ago and spray several apartments. Only a short-term fix as the roaches that are not killed in the process just move to another area of the building which has not been sprayed so we're almost sure to have them back in a few months and to continue finding one in the kitchen sink or in the bathroom tub once every week or month. That's not really what you expect from a building that ask 3.5 to 5k per months... Of course Sandy hasnt helped but the bugs didn't pick our building, they were already around for months as per other tenants testimonies. The building management keeps treating the problem like its an individual flat problem but refuses to admit the building infestation and to take broader measures. Some of the building staff were even telling us "hey it's NY you have roaches...". Total nightmare. Conclusion: will have to move in a few months because I won't take the chanc of another wave of infestation.

JMPSE:
Here's what you can do:
Hire a exterminator to service your apt once a month.
He can put "jell" down which will attract and then kill the roaches in your apt.
The only hope for infested buildings is to have each apt. serviced by an exterminator who will also put a dab of jell in all of the important places.

Get some foam strips and tuck it into every crack and crevice.
Make your apt a fortress against the roaches.

Call "CitiWindows" to install their weather-proofing on your apt. door, this will keep the roaches from entering your apt. from the hallway.

(the management company may not allow you to install the "CitiProof" door system, because it's a rental)
It's expensive but really the only way.

I asked my former roommate if he had critters in his new bldg. He said nothing bad, just some Japanese water bugs. I had to break it to him that those are ALSO known as "Oriental Cockroaches" and are indeed a related species to plain old cockroaches.

They are yucky, all of them.

Hasn't that outdated terminology for critters been improved upon yet?
jason, you can start by coining a new : "Asian Cockroaches".
or "Asian Penisroaches".

JMPSE, so you're seeing a roach "once every week or month" and calling it an infestation? That sounds normal to me. There's not a building in the city that DOESN'T have roaches somewhere.

That may be true, but have NEVER seen a roach in my apt the 4 years I lived in Dowtown or in the 5 years I've lived uptown. NEVER.

The penisroaches are watching jason with their little beady eyes, rubbing their attenai together.
When jason is sleeping, they come out.

@jason8:
I call an infestation when you have tens of roaches falling off the ceiling and crawling from under the kitchen stove in a least 3 different apartments located on 4th, 8th and 9th in 1 night. I call an infestation when you keep finding an adult roach, sometimes dead sometimes alive, in your clothes closet or in your bedroom on average once in a week or every ten days. I call an infestation when the building only fights the ongoing problem with local spraying of chemicals, instead of treating the entire building in all areas. I call it an infestation when I realize my problems have been the problems of several other tenants for months but as tenants aren't organized, the problems persist.

It's your choice if you tolerate to live with roaches "because you live in NY" but I think you just naively accepts the building b/s propaganda that it is fine to live with cockroaches...

JMPSE: That's a lot of roaches.
if you take my advice you should be O.K.
Don't depend on the building, other tenants or managing agent.

There are roaches in every building and probably rodents too, particularly at this time of year when it's cold outside and the critters are looking for warmth. The only question is whether you see them or not. What you describe is unacceptable and you should document it with photos and refuse to pay the rent until it's resolved, or even better break the lease and move out. Good luck.
