Discussion about
What is the best way to finish flooring using oil based Minwaz. My understanding is 1. waterpopping 2. apply stain 3. 2 coats of semigloss 4. 1 coat of sating finish (the final look) The floor guy says it is a total overkill and we shold just do stain and 2 coats of poly in satin. The flooring is white aok rift and quarter strip. Stain will be walnut to show all the grain as much as possible and not to be too dark Please advise. What is the most durable way of doing floors? Cost is not so much a concern but the longevity is.

Bela,

You dont need to waterpop if your not going too dark.

Sand
Stain
poly

3 coats is fine

Sand
Don't stain
water-based (non-ambering) x 3-4

Your place will look twice as large as it would if you stained/polyed.

If you stick to your original vision, and if you're in an apartment building, check to see if oil-based is allowed. Some buildings seek to avoid the off-gassing, which lingers.

Most buildings do not let you use oil

Alan, they want a walnut look, how can they get that without staining?
